This Week: The Southwest Minnesota State University men’s basketball team (10-4, 3-2 NSIC) continues its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference homestand this weekend hosting defending NSIC and NCAA champion Winona State University (11-4, 4-2 NSIC) on Friday, Jan. 9 and Upper Iowa University (2-10, 1-5 NSIC) on Saturday, Jan. 10. Both game are scheduled to start at 8 p.m. at the R/A Facility in Marshall.
About Southwest Minnesota State: The Mustangs are 10-4 overall, 3-2 NSIC, following a 75-68 home victory over Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday night. It was SMSU’s third straight win. Ross DeMasi scored a season-high 16 points on 7 of 11 shooting, while Jon DeRock added 15 points connecting on a game-high four three-pointers. SMSU committed just six turnovers in the game and forced UMC into 15 turnovers resulting in 22 points. SMSU was outrebounded 39-29, marking just the second time in 14 games that an opponent has held a rebound edge over SMSU.
DeRock leads SMSU in scoring with 10.8 points per game and has drilled a team-high 30 three-pointers. DeMasi is averaging 9.3 ppg and team-best 10.9 rebounds per game. Andrew Peschong is the team leader in assists with 55.
