OMAHA, NEB.: Alina Honken earned her first career win and Erin Dickhausen belted her first home run of the season as Southwest Minnesota State knocked off No. 3 Nebraska-Omaha 8-2 on Sunday at the Nebraska-Omaha Classic. It is believed that third-ranked UNO is the highest ranked team SMSU has ever defeated and the win puts SMSU at 15-6 this season, including a perfect 5-0 weekend at the UNO Classic.
The Mavericks took a 1-0 lead in the first on the aid of two hits, a walk and a wild pitch. But the Mustangs answered right back in the bottom of the inning when Dickhausen hit an RBI single to center to score Jessica Paczosa.
SMSU took the lead in the third on a solo home run by Dickhausen with one out. For the career home runs leader at SMSU, it was her first of the year.
UNO tied it up in the top of the fifth following a single and a double.
The Mustangs finally took control of the game in the bottom of the sixth when they scored six runs on four hits, aided by two Maverick errors. Pinch runner Janeane Robinson scored on a throwing error, before Paczosa hit a two-run single to make the score 5-2. After a base hit by Meaghan Laetsch, Dickhausen ripped a two-run double to left. Dickhausen scored one batter later on a groundout by Amanda Burkhart to cap the scoring.
Honken got through the top of the seventh without allowing any runs, despite a double and an error, to earn her first career victory.
Honken allowed eight hits and walked three as UNO left 10 runners on base, but a strong Mustang defense and some clutch pitching by Honken held the Mavericks to just two runs.
At the plate, Dickhausen led Southwest with three hits and four runs batted in. Amanda Opatz also added two hits.
SMSU will be back in action on Wednesday, Apr. 2 with a doubleheader in Fayette, Iowa, against Upper Iowa University.
