Mattke Field has been home for the Southwest Minnesota State University football team since the 1971 season.
Construction on SSU stadium, as it was called for 14 years, began in 1970 and was completed on August 7, 1974.
On September 28, 1985, SSU Stadium was renamed Mattke Field, in honor of retiring men's director of athletics, Glenn Mattke. Mattke, who was a major part of Mustang athletics for 18 years, assumed duties as full-time athletic director in June of 1970 and helped with the plans for the new football complex which no bears his name. Mattke served as an assistant coach in football during the 1968 campaign, then was the first men's coach in basketball, golf and baseball in addition to being named the women's softball coach in 1981.
In addition to SMSU football, the Marshall High School football team also calls Mattke Field home. Lights were installed to the 5,000 seat stadium in 1997, with the first college game being played under the lights on Sept. 12, 1998.
Mattke Field was a terror for opponents in the late '80's and early '90's. Southwest Minnesota State compiled a 17-game home winning streak during that time, including four-straight unbeaten seasons.
Even though Mattke passed away in 1996 and is no longer with us, his legacy in Mustang athletics will live forever.
