ST. PAUL, MINN.: Southwest Minnesota State University freshman Curtis Smith has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Pitcher of the Week for his performance last week in Ft. Myers, Fla.

The announcement came today from the league office in St. Paul, Minn. 

Smith, a 6-foot-5 left-handed pitcher from Calgary, Alberta, Canada tossed a three-hit shutout in his first career start in SMSU’s 8-0 victory over Lock Haven University (Pa.) on Mar. 20 in Ft. Myers, Fla.  He struck out three batters, walked one and allowed just three singles in his seven innings of work. 

Smith finished SMSU’s 10-game Florida trip with a 2-0 record while not allowing a run in 11 innings pitched.  He pitched four innings of shutout relief to earn the victory in SMSU’s 4-3 victory over University of Charleston (W.Va.) on Mar. 9 allowing four hits while striking out four and walking one.  

For the season Smith is 3-0 in three appearances with a 1.26 ERA in 14.1 innings with eight strikeouts.

Smith is a 2008 graduate of Vauxhall High School in Vauxhall, Alberta.

Southwest Minnesota State, located in Marshall, Minn., is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.  SMSU is 8-6 overall and opens conference action this weekend Mar. 21-22 with a four-game series versus Winona State University at the Metrodome in Minneapolis.
