MARSHALL, Minn. - The No. 7-seeded Southwest Minnesota State tennis team (9-10, 4-6 NSIC) will travel to the Minneapolis this weekend to take on No. 2-seeded St. Cloud State (19-6, 8-1 NSIC) Saturday at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament.
Series record: SMSU is 5-23 against SCSU; the Mustangs have lost their last 13 matches against the Huskies. SMSU and SCSU met up earlier this year on March 21 in St. Cloud, where the Huskies dropped the Mustangs 7-2.
Last time out: SMSU played in a trio of close matches last weekend, coming away with a 5-4 win over Bethel on Saturday. The team was led by the duo of
Cailey Grupe (Trimont, Minn.) and
Trisha Baldwin (Montevideo, Minn.), who won their No. 1 doubles match over Lisa Scheevel and Steph Brown in an 8-4 decision. Grupe also won her No. 3 singles match 6-1, 6-4 over Ashley Dohlen, while Baldwin defeated Heather Ritger 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 at No. 4. On Sunday, the Mustangs were in St. Cloud to take on Winona State. SMSU dropped the match to Winona 5-4. Baldwin and Angie Weigmann (Spicer, Minn.) recorded the only singles wins for SMSU as Wiegmann defeated Katelyn Dubbelde 6-3, 6-4 and Baldwin won her match over Addison Adler 7-6 (7-5), 6-2. SMSU finished its regular season on Monday when the Mustangs were defeated by the Sioux Falls 5-4.
Multiple Mustangs ranked in Central Region: Freshman
Lissa Murakami (São Paulo, Brazil) is ranked No. 12 in the latest ITA Central Region singles rankings. She currently holds a record of 11-8. The SMSU doubles team of juniors
Cailey Grupe (Trimont, Minn.) and
Trisha Baldwin (Montevideo, Minn.) are ranked No. 4. The duo is 14-5 from SMSU's No. 1 spot.
Senior momentum: The end is nearing for SMSU's two seniors,
Danielle Hildebrandt (St. James, Minn.) and
Amy Daniels (Marshall, Minn.). The two have been mainstays in the SMSU lineup throughout their careers, making waves in both singles and doubles play.
The coach: The longest tenured coach currently on staff at SMSU,
George Seldat is in his 16th season as head tennis coach of the Mustangs in 2010. Seldat has compiled a 85-155 overall record at SMSU.
