Dave Broyles (1971-75) was a four-year letter winner for the SMSU swimming & diving team and was one of the first dominate swimmers in program history. He was a member of three Northern Intercollegiate Conference championship teams (1973, 1974, 1975), won 10 individual conference titles, was a member of five conference champion relay teams and competed in three NAIA National Championships.

A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., Broyles capped his freshman season winning three NIC individual championships (500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and 1,650-yard freestyle) in 1972, while setting conference records in both the 200 and 1,650. He repeated as the NIC champion in the same three events in 1973, including setting a conference record in the 500-yard freestyle. That same season he was also member of the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relay teams that won NIC titles with record-setting times.

In 1974, he won the conference title in the 500-yard freestyle and set the NIC record in winning the 1,650-yard freestyle. He also anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay to a conference record first place time. As a senior team captain in 1975, he once again won the NIC title in both the 500 and 1,650-yard freestyle with record-setting times and was a member of the 400 and 800-yard freestyle championship teams.

He was a member of the 400-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relays that placed eighth and 12th at the 1975 NAIA Championships to earn NAIA All-American honorable mention accolades.
