Gary Schleper

Gary Schleper (1982-87) was a two-sport standout for the Mustangs in both baseball and football.

A native of Shakopee, Minn., Schleper was a three-time All-NIC and three-time NAIA All-District honoree in baseball, appearing in 148 career games.

In 1984, he batted .447 with nine home runs and nine doubles, while driving in 45 RBIs to earn team MVP honors. His on-base percentage of .584 ranks first in school single-season history, while his .447 batting average still ranks as the third highest in the school single-season record book.

In 1986, he batted .344, leading the team with nine home runs, while ranking third with 39 RBIs. During his senior season in 1987, he once again led the squad with eight home runs and was second with 40 RBIs.

He finished his career on the diamond holding school records in home runs (27), RBIs (130), doubles (36), on-base pct. (.507) and slugging pct. (.636). He also recorded 12 victories and 15 complete games on the mound, earning team co-pitcher of the year honors in 1987.

On the football field, Schleper played in 40 career football games recording 152 career pass receptions for 1,873 yards and nine touchdowns. A three-time All-NIC honorable mention at tight end, he led SMSU in receptions in 1984 and was second on the team in receptions in 1982, 1983 and 1985.
