Scott Koenen (1998-2001) was a three-year letter winner for the men’s basketball team and closed his career as one of the most decorated players in program history
A native of Clara City, Minn., Koenen played one season at Ridgewater College before joining the SMSU program in 1998, along with older brother, Mike, and younger brother Chad. Koenen would help lead SMSU to prominence, becoming the first player in team history to lead the team in both scoring and rebounding in three straight seasons.
After earning All-NSIC honorable mention in 1998, he was a first team All-NSIC honoree in both 2000 and 2001, and helped the Mustangs win their first-ever league title and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history in 2001.
As a senior in 2000-01, he averaged 15.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 54 percent from the field, while being named an NCAA All-American by four organizations (NABC, Basketball Times, Daktronics, Division II Bulletin).
Also named NABC and Daktronics second team All-Region in 2000, Koenen closed career ranking first in team history in free throws made (381), third in points (1,399), fourth in field goal percentage (51.4), fourth in rebounds (648), fourth in blocked shots (70), fifth in field goals made (483).
