Hello Mustang Fans!
The SMSU Athletics Department is a busy place as our fall sports season is wrapping up and our winter sports (men’s basketball, women’s basketball, wheelchair basketball and wrestling) have begun practicing in preparation for exhibition games and pre-season tournaments.
On Thursday, all the SMSU Basketball teams took the court for the annual “SMSU Late Show” featuring our men’s, women’s and wheelchair basketball student-athletes and coaches. The teams played in front of a great crowd of booster and community members with a large showing from the SMSU Student Body.
Freshmen Women’s Basketball player, Bree Holleman, won the three-point contest beating Mustang Men’s Basketball player, Trent Carlson on the last shot. Scott Roehl received a little help from the crowd on the last dunk that gave him all 9’s from the judges, but he could not hold off West and his ability to get off the ground. Lavione West flew over Stanger for the last dunk of the night to solidify himself as this year’s Slam Dunk Champion earning all 10’s from the judges. The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball team took the floor with greater numbers and much more size which will be tested this Saturday and Sunday as they kick-off the winter season at home.
This weekend, we have a host of athletics events occurring on the campus of SMSU. Both the women’s and the men’s basketball teams will be scrimmaging in the R/A Facility today. The Mustang Women’s Basketball team will be scrimmaging from 10:00 to noon and the Mustang Men will be on the court from 12:30 pm until 4:30pm. The SMSU Wrestling team will see their first action at the Bison Open in Fargo, ND on November 13.
The Mustang Volleyball team (18-3, 10-2 NSIC) will continue NSIC play this weekend hosting Winona State last night and Upper Iowa today at 3:00 pm in the PE Gym. The Mustangs will be on the road for the next two weekends before returning home for the last regular season matches of the season on November 11 & 12 when Bemidji State and UMD come to Marshall.
The SMSU Volleyball team was ranked third in the first release of NCAA Division II Central Region Rankings. The Central Region is composed of teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
The NSIC holds down the top five spots in this edition of the rankings. Wayne State sits on the top of the list boasting wins over Minnesota Duluth and Concordia-St. Paul. Minnesota Duluth is second with Southwest Minnesota State coming in third ahead of Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State. Nebraska-Kearney, Metro State, Colorado School of Mines, Regis (Colo.) and St. Cloud State round out the top ten in the Central Region. The rankings include the top ten teams in each of the eight regions, with records through October 18. The next rankings will be released on Oct. 27.
The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball team opens its 2010-11 season this weekend hosting three games at the R/A Facility and PE Gym. The Mustangs, under head coach Lew Shaver, open the season on Saturday versus the Wisconsin Thunder starting at 5:30 p.m. The two teams will play again later that night at 7:30 pm with both games will be played at the R/A Facility.
The two teams will conclude the weekend with a final game on Sunday morning in the PE Gym with tip-off slated for 10:00 am. SMSU finished 4-13 last season, but recorded a 2-1 record at the national tournament to earn fifth place.
The Mustang Football team (3-4, 2-4 NSIC) concludes its two-game road trip today, taking on Upper Iowa University (1-6, 1-5 NSIC) in a NSIC game in Fayette, IA with the kickoff set for 1:00 pm at Eischeid Stadium. SMSU will be looking to rebound following a 24-6 road loss to St. Cloud State last Saturday, while UIU will also be looking to earn bounce back after losing to Minnesota State 48-14 last Saturday in Mankato. The Mustangs will be home next Saturday as they play Winona State at Mattke Field in the Regional Event Center at 4:30 pm.
The SMSU Soccer team (1-9-2, 0-7-2 NSIC) will travel to Winona State (10-3-1, 7-1-0 NSIC) on Saturday at 1:00 pm, and then to Upper Iowa (7-6-1, 3-5-1 NSIC) on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Mustangs dropped two close competitions last weekend with MSU Moorhead shut out the Mustangs in a 1-0 decision on Saturday and Minnesota, Crookston defeated SMSU 2-1 on Sunday. SMSU took 56 shots on the weekend, but only one of Brittany Oehlerking’s shots found the back of the net on Sunday. MSU Moorhed and Minnesota, Crookston took a combined 22 shots against the Mustangs.
Good luck to all of our Mustang Teams this week. Go Mustangs!
Congratulations to our Mustang Booster Club President, Brian Brandt, who provided the correct answer to the Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: At the 2010 Smokefest, a team won all four categories (pork, chicken, ribs and brisket) for only the second time in Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) history. What team swept the 2010 Smokefest Championships winning all four categories, and what was the name of the only other team to accomplish this feat in the history of the KCBS? The Swine Assassins swept this year’s SMSU Smokefest BBQ contest winning all four categories. Slap Yo’ Daddy BBQ won all four KCBS categories at the “Way Out West BBQ Championships” in 2009 at a contest in Stockton, CA.
