Hello Mustang Fans!
Last Sunday, the Mustang Men’s Basketball fans in attendance for Andy Wiersma Day saw an entertaining exhibition between the SMSU Men’s Basketball Alumni and the 2010-11 Mustang Men’s Basketball team. It was a very entertaining game with many Mustangs from the past showing they can still play the game. The Alumni were lead by Ryan Krome and Jacob Fahl who each had 12 points in the contest. The physical play throughout the game was very similar to what the Mustangs will face once the NSIC regular season schedule begins.
The Mustangs played last night against Dakota Wesleyan University in an exhibition winning 79-62 using a surge at the tail end of the game to pull away from the Tigers. The SMSU Basketball team is back in action this Sunday when the head to Maryville, MO to begin the regular against Northwest Missouri State University in a non-conference match-up beginning at 3:00 pm.
The SMSU volleyball team (24-3, NSIC 16-2) has moved down one spot and is ranked No. 2 in the latest NCAA Central Region volleyball rankings, announced by the NCAA national volleyball committee on Wednesday. The Mustangs will close out the regular season this weekend when they host No. 7 Minnesota Duluth at 7:00 pm. on Friday. SMSU will then welcome Bemidji State on Saturday with the first serve set for 4:00 pm.
Also this week in Mustang Volleyball, five players on the 2010 all-conference volleyball team released Tuesday by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Devin Diedrich, Mary Groth, Cara Carson and Brooke Burmeister were all named to the All-NSIC team and Kenzie Niesche was named All-NSIC honorable selection. Diedrich was also named the NSIC Offensive Player of the Year.
The SMSU Football team (4-6, 3-6 NSIC) concludes the 2010 season on Saturday when they host Concordia University (7-3, 6-3 NSIC) at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center with kickoff slated for 1:00 pm. SMSU will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak and with a victory will have finished the season with its second straight 5-6 overall record. Saturday’s game is also the final home game for 25 SMSU seniors. The players and their parents will be honored prior to the game.
The SMSU Wrestling team opens their 2010-11 season this weekend when the Mustangs head to Fargo, ND on Saturday to participate in the Bison Open. Head Coach, Jesse Nelson, is excited about the competition he has this year within all the weight classes. The Mustang Wrestling team has 47 wrestlers on the team with 36 of them competing in this weekend’s tournament.
The SMSU Women’s Basketball will open regular season play on Tuesday, November 16 when they take on William Penn (Iowa) at home at 7:00 pm in the R/A Facility. The Mustangs are coming off a 75-48 loss to the Minnesota Golden Gophers in Williams Arena last Wednesday night.
