Hoof Prints - Sept. 16, 2010

Hello Mustang Fans!

Last Saturday, the Mustang Booster Club sponsored the 5th Annual Mustang Shootout presented by Marshall Radio out at Shooter’s Sporting Clays, and the event was a huge success. We had 93 shooters who participated in a number of events throughout the morning and early afternoon. Here is a list of the Mustang Shootout winners:

Champion of Champions Competition: This year’s event featured the Shootout Champions of years past
competing against each other for a number of prizes. Past Champions: Brad Strootman, Ron Halgerson,
 Doug Lemke, Drew Benson and Lance Hurd had a shoot off at the end of the day’s events with Drew
 Benson prevailing as the 2010 Champion of Champions. Congratulations to Drew and all of our individual
 and team winners.
 
A big thank you goes out to a great Mustang Shootout Committee that includes Rolly Muller, Chuck
 Muller, Neil Frost, David Krull, Ron Halgerson, Bill Mulso, Tim Steinbach, Nate Petersen, Steve Petersen,
 Chuck Myrbach and Brad Strootman. Thank you to all the shooters who participated in the 2010 Mustang
Shootout. A special thank you to Steve and Nate Petersen for hosting the Mustang Shootout at
Shooter’s Sporting Clays and Brad Strootman and the Marshall Radio Station for their support of this great
 event.

THIS WEEKENDS EVENTS:

The SMSU Athletics Department has a whole line-up of events going on this weekend beginning with the 5th Annual Smokefest starting on Friday night with the Mustang Trail Street Dance. The street dance will begin at 5:30 pm and include BBQ vendors, a beverage garden and over 40 competition BBQ teams beginning to prepare their meats for the following days contest. Also Friday night, HickTown Mafia will be performing in the Regional Event Center plaza following the Marshall Tiger Football game and play until mid-night.

Smokefest will continue through the night and the morning with the judging of the contestant’s meats beginning at noon on Saturday. Our BBQ vendors and beverage garden will open at 11:00 am on Saturday and be open through halftime of the Mustang Football game that evening. Bring the entire family out to the Regional Event Center this weekend and experience great BBQ, wonderful music, Mustang Soccer, Volleyball and Football all on the campus of SMSU.

Also on Saturday morning, the SMSU Athletics Department will be hosting the Mustang Stampede 5K Walk/Run to benefit SMSU Women’s Athletics. Here is the schedule for the Mustang Stampede:

8:00 – 9:00 am    Registration & Final Check-in (Regional Event Center)
8:30 – 11:30am    Women’s Health & Wellness Expo (Regional Event Center Concourse)
9:00 – 10:00am    5 K Walk/Run
11:30 – 11:45am    Award Ceremony (Regional Event Center Concourse)

The registration fee for the Mustang Stampede is $25 which includes a free breakfast, the women’s health & wellness expo and a Mustang Stampede t-shirt. Upcoming 2010 Fall Event Schedule:

The SMSU Football team (2-0, 1-0 NSIC) will host Bemidji State University (1-1, 0-1 NSIC) in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference game on Saturdayat Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center at 6:00 pm.  The game will be the first between the two schools since Sept. 27, 2007.

The SMSU Volleyball team ranked #5 nationally opened the 2010 NSIC season tonight with a 3-0 sweep over Upper Iowa. The Mustangs won by scores of 25-19, 25-15 and 29-27. SMSU improves to 8-1 overall, and 1-0 in the NSIC. The Mustangs will host Minnesota State University, Mankato in an NSIC match-up on Saturday at 3:00 pm at the PE Gym.

Mustang Women’s Golf team is idle this weekend preparing to host the Mustang Invite next weekend on September 25 & 26 at the Marshall Golf Club.

The SMSU Soccer team will take on Concordia-St. Paul, this Saturday at noon, and St. Cloud State on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The series between SMSU and Concordia-St. Paul began in 1999 however when the Mustangs defeated the Bears 7-0. Since then, SMSU has maintained an 8-4-1 record against Concordia.. St. Cloud and SMSU have met 14 times; a series which began in 1996. SMSU has won two of the 14 meetings between the two teams.
