Hoof Prints - Jan. 13, 2011

hosted by the Mustang Booster Club will be on Friday, February 25 in the SMSU Conference Center Ballroom. Tickets are just $50.00 each for your chance to win the grand prize of $5,000. If you are interested in purchasing a ticket call the athletic department at 507-537-7204.

If you have not been to the Gold Rush Raffle, you should buy a raffle ticket and join us for a night of fun, friendship and laughter. Every year, the raffle gets great reviews from the people who attend. It is a mid-winter social event that you will not want to miss with cash prizes, give-aways, mystery prizes, games, and silent and live raffle items. The Gold Rush is sponsored by the Mustang Booster Club and has sold out all six years. Here is a rundown of the Mustang Booster Club and SMSU Athletics Department special events coming up in January and February:

The Southwest Minnesota State University Men's and Women's Basketball teams will hold the 2nd Annual Alumni Basketball Weekend on January 22, 2011. There will be an alumni basketball game featuring both men's and women's past players that will be played in the PE Gym at SMSU starting at 2:00 pm.

After the alumni game, participants can grab a Burger King Whopper and cheer on the SMSU women's and men's basketball teams as they take on Bemidji State. A social will be held following the men's game at Shay's and is sponsored by the men's and women's basketball teams along with the Mustang Booster Club.

New This Year to the Alumni Basketball Weekend is "The Mustang Way," in honor and recognition of basketball teams and coaches who paved the way for SMSU basketball today.

This Year's Alumni Weekend teams of honor are:

Women's Teams: 1969-70, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1974-75
Men's Teams: 1967-68, 1968-69, 1969-70, 1970-71, 1971-72, 1972-73, 1973-74, 1974-75

Teams will have the opportunity to coach during the Alumni Basketball games Saturday afternoon and will then be recognized on Saturday evening during the SMSU basketball games. The SMSU Women’s Basketballl team (3-10, 2-7 NSIC) will conclude a three game road trip today and tomorrow by traveling to Bismarck, N.D. to take on the University of Mary (8-6, 5-5 NSIC) and Northern State (9-5, 6-4 NSIC) in Aberdeen, S.D. Both games are set to tip-off at 6:00 pm.

The SMSU Men’s Basketball team (6-7, 3-6 NSIC) will also conclude the first half of the 22-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season this weekend with a pair of road games in North and South Dakota.  Today, the Mustangs will battle the University of Mary (10-4, 6-4 NSIC) starting at 8:00 pm at the McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D.  SMSU will then wrap-up the weekend, on Saturday, with Northern State University (6-8, 2-8 NSIC) at the Barnett Center also at 8:00 pm.

Both the SMSU Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams will play seven of its 11 conference games at home to conclude the NSIC basketball schedule. The Mustangs will return home on Friday, January 21, to begin a four-game homestand.

The SMSU Wrestling team will pick up action again on January 19 in a triangular with Dakota Wesleyan and Northwestern (Iowa) beginning at 4:30 pm in Mitchell, S.D.

The Mustang Wheelchair Basketball team (6-1 overall) will return to action January 15 as the Mustangs play host to the Timberwolves with the set at 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm on January 15. The following weekend (Jan. 21-23), the Mustangs will head to Champagne, IL for the College Conference Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.

Congratulations to Dr. Randy Johnson, for providing the correct answer to last week’s Mustang Hoofprints Trivia Question: What SMSU Head Coach has been in the profession of coaching, at any level, the longest? Head Wheelchair Basketball Coach, Lew Shaver, has over forty years of coaching experience with 26 of those years being at SMSU. Mustang Head Volleyball Coach, Terry Culhane, has been coaching for 29 years and Head Baseball Coach, Paul Blanchard, has been in the profession for 25 years.
