Hello Mustang Fans!
Beginning Friday evening, the SMSU Volleyball team, SMSU Athletics Department and the Alumni Association will be partnering to host an all-class Mustang Volleyball Alumni Reunion.  This fall, Mustang Athletics and the Alumni Association have partnered to host three reunions for two athletic teams (football and volleyball) and one for the Radio/TV, Speech Communications and Public Relations department at SMSU. It is a tradition we are looking forward to continue in the upcoming years celebrating the successes and sharing the memories of our past athletic teams and academic programs at SMSU.

We have nineteen former volleyball student-athletes and coaches who have registered to attend this weekend’s festivities with many of our alumni attending with family members. Please join us in welcoming back our former volleyball student-athletes this Friday and Saturday. Here is the schedule of events for the Mustang Volleyball Alumni Reunion Weekend:

Friday, October 14th

Saturday, October 15th
11:00am   Check in (lower level conference center)

6:00pm   SMSU Football vs. St. Cloud State Reception to follow SMSU Volleyball Match (tenative start time 5:30pm)

This Week in Mustang Athletics:

The SMSU Soccer team (5-6-0 overall and 4-3-0 NSIC) is on the road this weekend playing the University of Minnesota, Crookston (3-9, 2-5 NSIC) on Saturday.   Sunday, the Mustangs will travel to Moorhead, MN to take on Minnesota State University Moorhead (7-3-1, 3-3-1 NSIC).  Both matches are slated for a 1:00 pm start. SMSU is coming off of a split last weekend losing to Augustana College 1-0 last Saturday and beating Wayne State College on Sunday 2-1.

The Mustang Football team (2-4, 2-3 NSIC, 0-2 NSIC South) returns home to face No. 16 St. Cloud State University (5-1, 4-1 NSIC, 2-0 NSIC North) in a NSIC match-up on Saturday evening  at the Regional Event Center with the kick-off set for 6:00pm.  The Mustangs are coming off their second NSIC victory of the season beating MSUM last Saturday 45-13.

The No.9SMSU Volleyball team (13-5, 7-2 NSIC) returns home after playing its last five straight matches on the road. The Mustangs will welcome St. Cloud State (5-12, 1-8 NSIC) on Friday at 7:00 pm. SMSU will get its second chance at No. 1-ranked Concordia University, St. Paul (18-0, 9-0 NSIC) at 3:00 pm on Saturday. The Mustangs are also coming off a spilt last weekend winning at Augustana College on Friday and losing in the fifth game at Wayne State College on Saturday.

The SMSU Women’s Golf finished the second round of the NSIC Fall Championships in fifth place. KC Kane carded a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday helping SMSU to a 48-over-par 336 in the second round of the tournament at the Jewel Golf Course in Lake City, MN.

The final two rounds of the NSIC Golf Championships will be played April 21-22 at the Dakota Ridge Golf Course in Morton, MN. Augustana continues to hold a large lead in the field of 13 teams. The Vikings carded a 308 on Sunday and holds a 40-stroke lead over Minnesota State with a two-round score of 613 (+37).

Kane shot an 85 on Saturday, but a season-low round of 75, helped her move up five spots to take over 4th overall with a 157 (+13). Krista Weiszhaar finished the second round with an 85 for a two-round total of 165 (+21) which currently sits her at 15th place. Marissa Campeau completed the first two rounds with 84-86= 170 (+26) and is in a tie for 22nd. Rachel Patnoe shaved two strokes off her first round score ending the day with a 90, for a two-round score of 182 (+38). Haley Gudim currently sits in a tie for 48th with a two-round total of 189 (+45).

The NSIC Fall Championships concludes SMSU’s fall season. The Mustang golf team will resume play at the Classic Club Invite in Palm Desert, CA on March 7-8.

And yes, one of our winter sports has started practice at the beginning of the week and the rest starting this Saturday. The Mustang Wrestling program began practice on Monday, October 10 while our Men’s, Women’s and Wheelchair Basketball programs can officially begin practice on Saturday, October 15. It is a very busy time in the SMSU Athletics Department as our fall sports begin to conclude their seasons and our winter sports are just starting up.
