November 3, 2011 – Hoof Prints Article

Hello Mustang Fans!

The madness continues this weekend with a host of high school and SMSU Athletic events being held on campus.  The Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) Volleyball Section 3A Semi-finals will be held in the R/A Facility tonight with the first match being Minneota taking on MACCRAY at 6:00pm followed by Red Rock Central versus Tracy/Milroy/Balaton. This Saturday, SMSU will play host to the Section 3AA High School Volleyball Finals beginning at 5:30pm followed by the Section 3A Finals at 7:00pm.

SMSU also welcomes the MSHSL Football Section Championship games this Friday, November 4 beginning at 12:00pm with Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley taking on Edgerton/Ellsworth in the 9 Man Section Championship game. At 2:30, Dawson-Boyd will battle Minneota/Lincoln for the Section 5A Championship. The 5:00pm game will feature Adrian versus Wabasso in the Section 3A Championship game concluding with Blue Earth taking on Luverne at 7:30pm with all games being played at Mattke Field in the Regional Event Center.

I would like to extend an invitation out to our Mustang supporters to join us at the Mustang Booster Club Luncheons on Wednesdays at Shay’s Lounge in the Ramada Inn at 12:00pm. This week, Mustang Men’s Basketball Coach, Brad Bigler, gave an informative presentation where the crowd was able to talk and ask questions of our very own Tim Miles on skipe, who is the Head Men’s Basketball Coach at Colorado State University. Coach Bigler and Miles gave the group a great preview to this Saturday’s exhibition game between SMSU and Colorado State.

We also had an opportunity to meet and get to know three of our new men’s basketball players and our two new assistant coaches. Each week, we have a featured speaker and also hear from the head coaches of each of our sports who are currently in season. The Mustang Booster Club Luncheons are open to the public and provide you a great chance to get to know our coaches, student-athletes and staff members while learning all about Mustang Athletics.

This Week in Mustang Athletics:

The SMSU Soccer team finished their season with a record of 5-11-1 (4-8-1 NSIC) with a loss on the road to Bemidji State 1-0. The Mustang’s five wins is the highest win total since going 9-10-1 in 2004. I would like to thank Head Coach, TJ Buchholz, Assistant Coach, Logan Webb, and all our soccer players for a great effort this season!

The Mustang Football team (3-6, 3-5 NSIC, 1-3 NSIC South) concludes its 2011 home season this Saturday against NSIC co-leader Minnesota State University (7-2, 7-1 NSIC, 5-0 NSIC South) with the kickoff scheduled for 1:00 pm at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center.

Saturday will be Senior Day for 10 Mustang seniors and their families, who will be honored prior to kickoff.  SMSU will be looking for its first-ever victory over Minnesota State in 10 games and will also be looking to rebound from last Saturday’s 47-20 road loss to Winona State. Minnesota State is on a three-game winning streak and last played on Thursday, Oct. 27, earning a 27-26 home win over Augustana.

SMSU was ranked sixth in the Central Region rankings this past week.

Congratulations to Mustang Head Coach, Terry Culhane, who won his 200th career match as a collegiate head coach at SMSU. Culhane ranks third all-time at SMSU with a career record of 200-59 in eight seasons.

The Mustangs will continue their homestand on Friday hosting the University of Mary in a “Red Out” match beginning at 7:00 pm in the PE Gym. The two teams will tip-off at 6:00 pm at Frost Arena in Brookings, SD. The Mustangs will begin regular season play on November 12, hosting the University of Sioux Falls at 2:00 pm. in Marshall.

This Saturday, the Mustang Men’s Basketball team will head to Fort Collins, CO, to compete against NCAA Division I Colorado State in an exhibition game beginning at 3:00pm CT.
