Hello Mustang Fans!

This Friday will wrap-up the MSHSL Football Quarter Final Championship games held at SMSU. The first game will begin at 5:00pm with Edgerton/Ellsworth battling Nicollet in the 9 Man. At 8:00pm, Adrian will take on Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s for the Section 3A Quarter Final Championship with all games being played at Mattke Field in the Regional Event Center.

It is always a wonderful experience to host the MSHSL Volleyball and Football State Playoff games at SMSU. We are very thankful for the opportunity to host these events and hope the 20 different high school teams and their fans from southwestern Minnesota enjoyed our facilities, the game environment and the City of Marshall.

This Week in Mustang Athletics:

The Mustang Football team (3-7, 3-6 NSIC, 1-4 NSIC South) concludes the 2011 season on Saturday facing Concordia University, St. Paul (5-5, 4-5 NSIC, 2-3 NSIC South) in a NSIC South Division match-up at the Metrodome in Minneapolis with kickoff slated for 5:00 pm.  The game was originally schedule to be played at CU’s Sea Foam Stadium, but the Golden Bears home field has a dome that can be inflated and the decision was made to move the game to provide flexibility in the event of an early snowfall.  

The SMSU punt team begins the week ranked No. 3 in the country in net punting (39.0).  Sophomore punter Mike Wenk has a 43.6-yard punt average, which would rank No. 6 in the country, but he does not meet the minimum punts per game to qualify.  The minimum is 3.6 per game and Wenk has punted an average of 3.3 per game.  SMSU quarterback Tyler Peschong ranks 36th in the country in total offense (258.1), while running back Warren Matthews ranks 30th in all-purpose yardage (143.3).

The No.9SMSU Volleyball (21-6, 15-3 NSIC) remains 7th in the Central Region rankings for the second straight week. The Central Region is made up of teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).

The NSIC has five teams ranked in the top 10, with Minnesota Duluth earning the top spot in the group. The top eight teams in the region will advance to the NCAA Central Region Tournament. Nebraska-Kearney was second, followed by, Concordia-St. Paul, Metro State (Colo.), Wayne State, Colorado School of Mines, SMSU and Regis (Colo.). UC-Colorado Springs and Minnesota State round-out the top 10. The NCAA Selection show is scheduled to air on NCAA.com on Sunday, November 13, at  9:00 pm.

The Mustangs will conclude regular season play on the road this weekend. The Mustangs will take on No. 2 Minnesota Duluth on Friday at 7:00 pm before ending the season with Bemidji State at 3:00 pm on Saturday. These are two very important matches for the Mustangs with the NCAA Region Ranking coming out on Sunday evening. 

The SMSU Women’s Basketball team will open the 2011-12 regular season this Saturday hosting the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls. The two teams will tip-off at 2:00 pm at the R/A Facility in Marshall. The Mustangs are coming off a loss to SDSU in an exhibition game in Brookings, SD 50-76.

The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball team opened its season on November 30 with two wins over the Minnesota Rolling Timberwolves. The Mustangs defeated the Timberwolves 53-37 in the first game, before picking up a 71-39 win in game two.

Jake Williams and Derek Klinkner led the Mustangs offense in the first game. Williams led all players with 22 points and Klinkner picked up a double-double with 12 points and 11 boards.

Williams poured it on in the second game picking up 31 points on 13 of 26 shooting. Savoy Brown got in on the scoring mix in game two picking up a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. It was a tight game through the first half, with SMSU leading 31-24 going into the break. The Mustangs outscored the Timberwolves 40-15 in the second half going on to a 71-39 win. Klinkner and David Nelson each added eight points in game two and Raymone Brown added seven points and seven boards.

The Mustangs will continue play on November 18, 19 & 20 at the Turkey Shootout in Salt Lake City, Utah. SMSU will play five games in three days at the tournament.

Also this Saturday, the Mustang Men’s Basketball team will open the 2011-12 season at NCAA Division I University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  Tip-off is slated for 1:00 pm at the Klotsche Center in Milwaukee. The Mustangs are coming off a 78-67 victory over St. Olaf College this past Tuesday.

The SMSU wrestling team will open its season on Saturday at the Bison Open in Fargo, N.D. before opening its dual schedule at home against St. Olaf on November 30.
