Hello Mustang Fans!
The Mustang Booster Club will be starting its Annual Membership Drive in May. We are always looking for passionate members of the Mustang Family to participate on one of our three membership drive teams. It is a fun event to take part in with lots of laughter, camaraderie and competitive spirit amongst the teams. If you are interested in finding out more about how to join a membership drive team, please contact Tim Steinbach at 507-537-7204.
In late June, the Mustang Booster Club will host the 2011 Mustang Golf Classic featuring a change in the format for this year’s event. The Golf Classic will become a two-day event this year with the traditional 18 hole, 5-person scramble golf tournament on Friday, June 24 at the Marshall Golf Club (MGC). On Friday night following the golf tournament, the Mustang Booster Club will host a social at MGC open to golfers and community members with entertainment, appetizers, beverages, a silent auction and concluding the programming with a live auction.
Saturday, June 25, the Mustang Booster Club will host a second 18 hole, 5-person scramble golf tournament at the Tyler Golf Club in Tyler, MN. Both tournaments are tentatively scheduled to have a shotgun start beginning at 11:00am. Please save the dates on your calendar and be looking for more information in my future Hoofprints articles as well as at SMSUMustangs.com.
Also on tap for this spring is the 7th Annual SMSU Football Alumni & Friends Golf Tournament which will be held on Saturday, May 14, at the Tyler Golf Club in Tyler, MN starting with a shotgun start at 11:00 am.
The cost is $100 per person and includes gift and team photo, box lunch, refreshments, hole prizes, silent auction, raffle and dinner. Registration and the driving range will open at 10:00 am, followed by a four-person scramble starting at 11 am Social, dinner and awards will held following the tournament at 4:30 pm. All proceeds from the event will go toward upgrading SMSU uniforms, on-field practice equipment, travel expenses and operating budget.

The SMSU Baseball team (8-11 overall, 4-4 NSIC) is coming off a split against Augustana College on Tuesday of this week in Sioux Falls, SD. The Mustangs will continue NSIC play this weekend with their first home games of the 2011 season. The Mustangs compete against Upper Iowa in a four-game series at Alumni Field on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's twin bill is set to begin at 1:00 pm and Sunday at 12:00 pm.
The SMSU Softball team (20-11, 8-3 NSIC) is ranked seventh in the NCAA Central Region softball rankings released on Wednesday. This marks the third consecutive week that SMSU has been ranked seventh in the Central Region poll. SMSU is one of the seven Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams to earn a spot in this week's edition of the Central Region rankings.
The NSIC earned the top three spots in the poll while taking seven out of 10 spots in the region. Minnesota State retained its No. 1 ranking, while Winona State and Augustana stayed put at No. 2 and No. 3. Metro State (Colo.) jumped up one spot to No. 4 switching places with Concordia-St. Paul who is now ranked fifth.
Colorado School of Mines bumped down to No. 6 while SMSU stayed put at No. 7 and is followed by Wayne State (Neb.), Mesa State (Colo.) and newcomer to this week's poll NSIC-member Minnesota Duluth.
The Mustangs are coming off a split against No. 8 Wayne State on Tuesday. SMSU will continue NSIC action at home this weekend hosting Winona State in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm on Saturday before welcoming Upper Iowa in a twin bill at 1:00 pm on Sunday. The SMSU Women's Golf team will compete this weekend at the 10-team Maverick Invitational at The Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, MN. The Mustangs begin first round play in the 36-hole invite on Saturday beginning at 10:00 am. The final round begins on Sunday begins with a shotgun start at 9:00 am.
SMSU, ranked No. 6 in the recent NCAA Central Region rankings, is coming off a fifth place finish at the 14-team Augustana Invite last weekend. This weekend’s invitational also includes Augustana, Bemidji State, Concordia-St. Paul, Minnesota State, MSU Moorhead, Minnesota-Crookston, St. Cloud State, Upper Iowa and Winona State.
