Hello Mustang Fans!
Yesterday, Ross Webskowski (Compliance Officer), Rolly Muller (Assistant Athletic Director/Senior Women’s Administrator) and myself left for the NCAA Convention in Indianapolis, IN. We have sixteen legislative items we will be voting on during the NCAA Division II Business Session on Saturday morning. It will be a busy three and a half days with an NSIC meeting, professional development sessions and many NCAA educational sessions held each day.
We are a little over a month away from the mid-winter social event of the year. The Mustang Booster Club will be hosting the Gold Rush Raffle on Friday, February 24 in the SMSU Conference Center. The raffle tickets are available at the SMSU Athletic Department or you can buy a ticket from one of our many Mustang Booster Club members out selling in the community.
In June, the Mustang Booster Club will be holding another great SMSU Tradition, the David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic with an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament on Friday, June 15 at the Marshall Golf Club followed by the awards ceremony, a meal, live and silent auctions, and games lasting all evening. We will conclude the event with an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament at the Tyler Golf Club on Saturday, June 16 with an awards ceremony and social following the event. Please put these two events down on your calendar, today.
We are less than two weeks away from the SMSU Softball Team hosting its Winter Skills Clinic on January 22 and 29 at the PE Gym in Marshall.
The camp, under the direction of first-year head coach Missy Bruggeman and the SMSU softball team, is open for individuals in grades 2-12. The Youth Clinic is for individuals in grades 2-6 and is from 1:00 to 2:00 pm both days. The Offensive/Defensive Clinic is for grades 7-12 and will take place from 2:15 to 4:15 pm., while the Pitching/Catching Clinic is also for grades 7-12 and is from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.
The cost is $30 for the two Youth Clinics, $30 for the two Pitching/Catching Clinics and $40 for the two Offensive/Defensive Clinics. Individuals can sign-up for both the pitching/catching and offensive/defensive clinics.

Upcoming Schedule of Events for Mustang Athletics:
The SMSU Men’s Basketball team (7-6, 6-3 NSIC), currently tied for fourth in the NSIC standings, will take on the University of Mary (3-11, 2-8 NSIC) this Friday with the tip-off slated for 8:00 pm. The Mustangs will wrap-up the weekend on Saturday when Northern State University (9-5, 5-5 NSIC) comes to Marshall with a start time of 8:00 pm. SMSU is coming off a 82-63 victory over Minnesota State University, Mankato last Saturday.
The SMSU Women’s Basketball team (5-8, 4-5 NSIC) will end a three-game homestand this weekend hosting a pair of NSIC schools. The Mustangs will welcome the University of Mary (11-3, 8-2 NSIC) on Friday and Northern State (9-6, 5-5) on Saturday. Both games are set for a 6:00 pm tip-off at the R/A Facility in Marshall. SMSU is coming off a 58-65 loss to MSU Mankato last Saturday. Following this weekend, SMSU will play four straight road games before returning to Marshall on February 3.
The SMSU Wrestling team is ranked sixth in the NSIC and eighth in the Super Region 3 rankings released on Wednesday afternoon. The Mustangs received seven points in the regional rankings and 13 points in the conference rankings.
Justin Reinsma (133, So., Slayton, Minn.) is ranked fifth in the region and in the region. Jacob Begin (165, So., Anoka, Minn.) currently ranks third in the region and second in the NSIC.
Senior Martin Hagen (197, Hanley Falls, Minn.) ranks sixth in the regional rankings and fifth in the conference. Brian Rodas (285, Sr., Farmersburg, Iowa), who has yet to wrestle this season is ranked fourth in the region and fourth in the conference.
The Mustangs were in action last night at home in a triangular match against Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) and Waldorf College (Iowa). The team will then head to Gunnison, CO to wrestle three matches against Colorado Mesa, Western State and Colorado Pueblo on Saturday. It is a busy week for the Mustang Wrestling program.
The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball program’s next competition will be in Champaign, IL on January 21 playing four games in two days at the University of Illinois.
