Hello Mustang Fans!

We are a little over a month away from the mid-winter social event of the year. The Mustang Booster Club will be hosting the Gold Rush Raffle on Friday, February 24 in the SMSU Conference Center. The raffle tickets are available at the SMSU Athletic Department or you can buy a ticket from one of our many Mustang Booster Club members out selling in the community.

We sell 600 raffle tickets each year. Each Gold Rush Raffle Ticket ($50) will get the holder of the ticket entry into the February 24 evening event where they will enjoy beverages, appetizers, games, silent and live auctions, a great atmosphere and the chance to win $5,000.

In June, the Mustang Booster Club will be holding another great SMSU Tradition, the David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic with an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament on Friday, June 15 at the Marshall Golf Club followed by the awards ceremony, a meal, live and silent auctions, and games lasting all evening. We will conclude the event with an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament at the Tyler Golf Club on Saturday, June 16 with an awards ceremony and social following the event. Please put these two events down on your calendar, today.

This weekend, the SMSU Softball Team will be hosting its Winter Skills Clinic on January 22 and 29 at the PE Gym in Marshall. The camp, under the direction of first-year head coach Missy Bruggeman and the SMSU softball team, is open for individuals in grades 2-12. The Youth Clinic is for individuals in grades 2-6 and is from 1:00 to 2:00 pm both days.  The Offensive/Defensive Clinic is for grades 7-12 and will take place from 2:15 to 4:15 pm., while the Pitching/Catching Clinic is also for grades 7-12 and is from 4:30 to 5:30 pm.

The cost is $30 for the two Youth Clinics, $30 for the two Pitching/Catching Clinics and $40 for the two Offensive/Defensive Clinics. Individuals can sign-up for both the pitching/catching and offensive/defensive clinics.

The SMSU Baseball program, along with The Hitching Post in Marshall, have partnered again this year for the 4th annual “Super Supper” to help support the SMSU baseball program. The Super Supper will take place a day after the NFL Super Bowl on Monday, February 6, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at The Hitching Post on Highway 59 South in Marshall.

All food and beverages purchased from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm will be donated to the SMSU baseball program to help the team’s operating budget, including the squad’s trip to Arizona in March. For more information contact the SMSU baseball office at paul.blanchard@smsu.edu or 507-537-7268.

Upcoming Schedule of Events for Mustang Athletics:

The SMSU Men’s Basketball team heads north to begin a four-game NSIC road trip this weekend.  The Mustangs  (9-6, 8-3 NSIC), currently in sole possession of fourth in the NSIC standings, will battle the University of Minnesota Duluth (10-5, 7-4 NSIC) on Friday with tip-off slated for 8:00 pm at Romano Gymnasium in Duluth, MN.

SMSU will conclude the weekend on Saturday, taking on Bemidji State University (12-5, 7-4 NSIC) at the BSU Gymnasium starting at 6:00 pm.  The Mustangs are coming off two home wins over the University of Mary and Northern State.

The SMSU Women’s Basketball team (5-10, 4-7 NSIC) will also start a four-game road trip this Friday as they battle Minnesota Duluth (9-6, 6-5 NSIC), tip-off is set for 6:00 pm on the campus of UMD. The Mustangs will then head Bemidji State (5-11, 3-8 NSIC) to take on the Beavers beginning at 4:00 pm at the BSU Gymnasium. The Mustangs are coming off two home losses to the University of Mary and Northern State University.

Following this weekend, the SMSU Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams will play at Upper Iowa (January 27) and Winona State (January 28), before returning to Marshall on February 3.

The SMSU Wrestling team went 2-1 at the Western State Duals last Saturday picking up victories over No. 20 Colorado State-Pueblo and Colorado Mesa University. SMSU earned a 20-19 win over CSU-Pueblo and a 22-15 victory over Colorado Mesa University. SMSU finished the day with a 30-12 loss to host Western State. The Mustangs finished the week 4-1 with two victories earlier in the week versus Waldorf College (IA) and Dakota Wesleyan (SD) at SMSU. The Mustangs are now 6-2 in dual matches on the season.

Congratulations to Jacob Begin for being named the NSIC’s Wrestler of the Week going 5-0 last week for the Mustangs. SMSU will now turn its attention to NSIC action taking on Upper Iowa University on the road this Sunday with the match beginning at 2:00 pm.

The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball program will compete this weekend in Champaign, IL on Saturday playing four games in two days at the University of Illinois. The Mustangs will play the University of Edinboro, Illinois, Texas-Arlington and Alabama. SMSU is 5-6 overall as they head into this weekend’s competition.
