Hello Mustang Fans!

It is Homecoming Week at SMSU featuring the theme Mustangs for Life! The SMSU Athletics Department will host the Mustang Stampede this Saturday featuring a number of programs beginning at 9:00am at the Regional Event Center. Here is more information about the Mustang Stampede:

How the Mustang Stampede Works...
The Mustang Stampede is for everyone! In addition to the 5K walk/run, we are adding a 10K run for those seeking more of a challenge. Women, men, students, and families are all encouraged to participate. Strollers are welcome, kids 12 and under are free!

Kids Run & Fun Zone...
Before the Stampede begins there will be a free fun run for the kids ages 12 and under. During the Stampede, there will be a fun zone set up for the kids to hang out with their favorite Mustang players.

8 - 9 a.m.  Registration and Final Check-In
8:55 a.m. Kids Fun Run
9 a.m.   5K/10K Begins  (shirts & refreshments are available after the race)
11 a.m.    Homecoming Parage
2 p.m.    Homecoming Tailgate: Family Fun - pony rides, inflatables, clowns, food, beverage garden & live music
3 p.m.   Mustang Volleyball vs. Winona State
6 p.m.    Mustang Football vs. Wayne State College
9:30 p.m.   Dueling Pianos (at the Landmark Bistro, downtown Marshall)

In case of inclement weather, the Mustang Stampede will be held at the R/A Facility.

On Saturday beginning at 2:00 pm in the R/A Facility parking lot, there will plenty of Homecoming activities for families to take part in. We will have great food served by HyVee featuring a pork chop on a stick, beverages and ice cream. Bring your family out to SMSU and enjoy all the Homecoming festivities surrounding Mustang Volleyball at 3:00 pm and Football beginning at 5:00pm.

The SMSU Department of Athletics will host the7th annual "Celebration of Excellence" on Sunday beginning at 1:00 pm in the upper level of the SMSU Conference Center. The event will honor student-athletes and teams from the 2011-12 academic year.

Derek Klinkner, a former football player and wheelchair basketball player, will be this year’s senior student-athlete speaker. The event, which is free and open to the public, includes snacks and beverages.  The social begins at 1:00 pm, followed by the ceremony starting at 1:30 pm.  The event concludes 2012 Homecoming weekend at SMSU. This Week in Mustang Athletics:

This weekend, the SMSU Soccer team (5-4 overall, 3-4 NSIC) will go on the road for a pair of tough NSIC match-ups against Winona State on Saturday at 1:00 pm and Upper Iowa on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The Mustangs are coming of a weekend where they went 1-1 beating Crookston last Saturday and losing to Bemidji State on Sunday 0-1.

The SMSU Football team (1-4, 1-4 NSIC) football team returns home on Saturday, to face Wayne State College (4-1, 4-1 NSIC) at Mattke Field at the Regional Event Center in Marshall. The SMSU homecoming game is set to kickoff at 5:00 pm. The Mustangs are coming off a loss to USF 22-41 last Saturday is Sioux Falls, SD.

The SMSU Volleyball Team (14-1 overall, 6-1 NSIC) team earned the No. 2 ranking in the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association (AVCA) Top 25 Coaches’ Poll again this week. The Mustangs were 3-0 this past week with wins over Augustana, Northern State and MSU Moorhead.

Nebraska-Kearney (798) is 14-0 on the season and stayed idle in this week’s poll as the No. 1 ranked team for the fourth consecutive week. SMSU (761) remained in the No. 2 slot, while Minnesota Duluth (723) moved up to No. 3 after its victory over Concordia-St. Paul on Friday. Washburn (678) and Tampa (658) rounded out the top five, while Concordia-St. Paul (634) fell to No. 6 after suffering its third loss of the season. Nebraska-Kearney received 31 of the 32 first-place votes, with No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul clinging to the remaining vote.

Other NSIC schools to be ranked in the AVCA Top 25 this week were: Minnesota State (10th), and Wayne State (18th). Winona State and MSU Moorhead are among teams receiving votes. SMSU has now been ranked in the AVCA Top 25 for 85 consecutive weeks, dating back to Sept. 5, 2006.

No. 2 SMSU will return to the PE Gym this weekend for homecoming as they host Upper Iowa on Friday at 7:00 pm and Winona State on Saturday at 3:00 pm.

The Mustang Women’s Golf team will conclude its 2012 fall season this Saturday and Sunday at the 13-team NSIC Fall Championships at The Classic at Madden's in Brainerd, MN.

The first two rounds of the 72-hole conference championship takes place this weekend and will conclude with the final two rounds on April 20-21, 2013, at Dakota Ridge Golf Club in Morton, MN.

First round play is scheduled to begin on Saturday starting at 8:30 am, with SMSU’s first tee time at 10:30 am. The second round is set to begin on Sunday at 8:00 am.

SMSU head coach Ross Webskowski announced his five-person line-up will consist of senior Krista Weiszhaar (Harwood, N.D.), junior Rachel Patnoe (Milbank, S.D.), junior Marissa Campeau (Grantsburg, Wis.), freshman Emaleigh Vreeman (Edgerton, Minn.) and freshman Becky Koepp (Belle Plaine, Minn.).

The SMSU Women’s and Men’s Cross Country teams continue action this Saturday at the annual Caty’s Run hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato at Land of Memories Park in Mankato.

The men’s 4-mile (6,437-meters) race begins at 11:00 am, followed by the women’s 4,000-meter race at 11:30 am.
The race is held each year in honor of former MSU runner Caty Delwiche.

The SMSU women’s team is coming off a fifth place finish at the six-team Gale Woods Invite hosted by Crown College last Friday. AnnMarie Dykstra, running her first race for SMSU, led the team with a 38th place finish in the 6,000-meter race with a time of 28:15.

The SMSU men’s team suffered several injuries and was not able to field a complete team at the Gale Woods Invite. Demond Carter was SMSU’s highest finisher with a time of 31:55 to place 80th in the 8,000-meter race.
