Hello Mustang Fans!

Congratulations to SMSU’s Head Baseball Coach, Paul Blanchard for reaching 400 career wins in a sweep Augustana College in a non-conference doubleheader on Tuesday in the Metro Dome.

We also need to congratulate Mustang Wrestler, Justin Reinsma, for earning All-American status taking 7th Place in the NCAA Division II National Wrestling Tournament held in Pueblo, CO two weeks ago. The SMSU Wrestling team also had seven wrestlers earn Division II All-Academic Honors. Congratulations to Andrew Rodas, Justin Reinsma, Martin Hagen, Ethan Hildebrant, Cole Wilson, Trent Molacek and Micah Larson for their success in the classroom and on the mat. The Mustang Wrestling team finished 9th amongst all Division II Wrestling programs posting a 3.243 overall GPA.

The SMSU Men’s Basketball team ended a great season with a 19-7 overall record going 15-7 in the NSIC winning the NSIC Men’s Basketball Tournament for the first time in the history of SMSU. Congratulations to Head Coach, Brad Bigler, this coaching staff and our student-athletes for their accomplishments this season.

The Mustang Wheelchair Basketball team also concluded their season two weeks ago taking 6th Place in the National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament held on the University of Illinois’s campus. SMSU finished the season with an 8-14 overall record.

Next up for the Mustang Booster Club is a great SMSU Tradition, the David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic. The Golf Classic is an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament being held on Friday, June 15 at the Marshall Golf Club followed by the awards ceremony, a meal, live and silent auctions, and games lasting all evening.

The event will conclude the event with an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament at the Tyler Golf Club on Saturday, June 16 with an awards ceremony and social following the event. Please put these two events down on your calendar, today.

Upcoming Schedule of Events for Mustang Athletics:

The SMSU Baseball team (10-5) swept Augustana College in a doubleheader this past Tuesday in the Metro Dome. The Mustangs are now off for ten days before heading to Fayette, IA to battle the Upper Iowa in their first NSIC action of the spring season. SMSU will have two doubleheaders against the Peacocks on March 31 and April 1.

The SMSU Softball team (9-7) lost a pair of games yesterday at Wayne State in non-conference play. The Mustangs will head back on the road this weekend for a couple of NSIC doubleheaders taking on Bemidji State on Saturday at 2:00 pm and the University of Minnesota Duluth at noon on Sunday.

The SMSU Women’s Golf team returned from their spring trip to California and Texas placing 6th in the Classic Club Invite in Palm Desert, CA at the Classic Club G. C. and finishing 12th in the Lions Invite in Pottsboro, TX at the Tanglewood Resort G. C. The Mustangs next competition will be in the NSIC Spring Women’s Golf Tournament held on April 21 & 22 at Dakota Ridge Golf Club in Morton, MN.

The SMSU Tennis team (0-9, 0-4 NSIC) will return to action on Friday battling the University of Minnesota Crookston in St. Cloud, MN at 6:30 pm. The Mustangs will then travel to Minnetonka, MN to take on MSU Moorhead at 5:00 pm.

Congratulations to Amy Grant, who provided the correct answer to last week’s Mustang Hoofprint’s Question: How many times has the SMSU Men’s Basketball team played the same opponent in the first round of the NCAA Central Region Basketball Tournament and their last game of the NSIC Men’s Basketball Tournament? The Mustang Men’s Basketball team has done this three times; this year versus MSU Moorhead, in 2008-09 against Northern State and in 2000-01with Winona State.
