Hello Mustang Fans!

The Mustang Athletics Department finished up its athletic season this past week. SMSU junior, Krista Weiszhaar, shot a final round 11-over-par 83, her best round of the week, to finish in a tie for 54th place at the 72-hole NCAA Division II National Championships held at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Louisville, Ky.

Weiszhaar finished the championship with a 51-over 339.  She shot an 87 in the first round on Wednesday, an 85 on Thursday and an 84 on Friday.

Abbey Gittings from Nova Southeastern won the individual national championship at 10-over 298, two shots ahead of Meghan Moore of North Carolina-Pembroke.  Nova Southeastern (Fla.) won the team championship.

Weiszhaar was the third individual in SMSU history and the first since 2004, to compete at the NCAA Championships. Congratulations to Krista and the entire SMSU Women’s Golf team on a great season!

This past weekend, you may have seen groups of student-athletes on a scavenger hunt around the City of Marshall. The SMSU Department of Athletics was the host institution for this year’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Summit sponsored by the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). Forty student-athletes, faculty athletic representatives and athletic department staff members from fourteen of the sixteen schools in the NSIC were in Marshall for a three day event including sessions on leadership and team building, participation in a civic engagement activity, its annual business session and a number of activities where the group was able to learn about SMSU and the Marshall Community.

The group arrived on Friday evening and concluded the summit on Sunday at noon with the closing of the business session. The SAAC Summit featured a civic engagement project where the group partnered with the City of Marshall in an effort to help clean up the banks of the Redwood River in town. This was a great opportunity for the SMSU Athletics Department to showcase the campus as well as the Marshall Community. A big thank you goes out to Rolly Muller, SMSU Assistant Director of Athletics, and Melissa Sewick, NSIC Assistant Commissioner, for their efforts in making the 2012 SAAC Summit a successful leadership experience for our student-athletes, faculty athletic representatives and the various athletic department staff members who attended the event.

The Mustang Booster Club will be hosting the David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic this summer. The Golf Classic is an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament being held on Friday, June 15 at the Marshall Golf Club followed by the awards ceremony, food, live and silent auctions, karaoke and with a social and games lasting all evening.

The Golf Classic will conclude the two-day program with an 18 hole, five-person scramble tournament at the Tyler Golf Club on Saturday, June 16 with an awards ceremony and social following the event. Please mark these two events on your calendar.
