Happy New Year Mustang Fans!
I hope everyone had a safe and happy Holiday Season. It has been quiet around the SMSU Department of Athletics. Last week, our teams returned to practice after the six day quiet period the NCAA Division II voted in to legislation with the Life in Balance package during the 2010 NCAA Convention. All schools in the NSIC were idle during the quiet period from December 20-26.
SMSU students will begin returning back to Marshall and campus next weekend starting the Spring Semester on Monday, January 14. Mustang Athletics enters the busiest stage of the athletic season where all teams will be utilizing our athletic facilities for their in and out of season workouts and/or practices.
Gold Rush Raffle Tickets are now available! You can contact Mike Ellingson, Brian Gruhot, Ken Mukomela and Karen VanKeulen who all have tickets. The 10th Annual Gold Rush Raffle held on Friday, February 22, 2013, at the SMSU Conference Center. We have some great live and silent auction items planned for this year’s event. The Gold Rush Raffle Committee has set a goal of raising $50,000 this year with all the proceeds going to SMSU Athletic Scholarships. Please mark your calendars now for this great mid-winter social event.

This Week in Mustang Athletics
The SMSU Wrestling team will look to continue their success into 2013 as the Mustangs will head to Gunnison, Colorado on January 12 for four duals hosted by Western State University (CO). SMSU will compete against Western State (CO), Colorado Mesa, California Baptist and CSU-Pueblo in the four duals. The Mustangs are coming off a trio of dual victories against Ridgewater Community College, St. John’s University and Itasca Community College.
The SMSU Women’s and Men’s teams will battle Winona State this Friday and head to Upper Iowa University on Saturday. The SMSU Women’s Basketball team will kick-off this tough NSIC road trip on Friday against the Warriors (9-3, 3-2 NSIC) with a 6:00 pm start time. The Mustang Men’s Basketball team (6-6, 3-2 NSIC) will follow the women’s game taking on the WSU Men’s Basketball team (9-3, 3-2 NSIC) with tip-off scheduled for 8:00 pm with both games being at McCown Gym.
The Mustangs will head to Fayette, Iowa with the women’s game also being at 6:00 pm on Saturday with the Peacocks coming into this weekend’s NSIC doubleheader with a 3-9 overall record and 0-5 in the NSIC. The UIU Men’s Basketball team (8-3, 4-1 NSIC) will look to stay atop the NSIC as they come into the weekend tied for first place with six other NSIC schools. The men’s game is scheduled to begin at 8:00 pm at Dorman Gym. Both SMSU teams will have a total of 19 days between their last games against Concordia-St. Paul on December 15.
The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball team will be back in action on January 19-20 at home as they take on the Rollin’ Timberwolves with two games on Saturday and one on Sunday.
I would like to wish all of our Mustang teams the best of luck this weekend!
Go Mustangs!
Congratulations to Andrew Ourada, who provided the correct answer to the last week’s Mustang Hoofprints Question: How much money did the Gold Rush Raffle raise last year for SMSU Athletic Scholarships (closest guess wins the prize)? Last year’s Gold Rush Raffle raised a little over $42,000 topping an all-time high for dollars raised at the event.
Hoofprints Trivia Question (please put this in a box with the title on top)
What SMSU Men’s Basketball Player holds the top spot for career 3-Point field goals made, attempted and highest field goal percentage for the Mustangs?
The first person to email me at MustangHoofPrints@SMSU.edu with the correct answer to this question will receive an SMSU t-shirt.
