Hello Mustang Fans!

Homecoming Week on the campus of SMSU is in full swing! This year’s homecoming theme is, “Paint the Town Brown & Gold”. You can find the full schedule of SMSU Homecoming events at SMSU.edu. Here are just a few of the events on Friday and Saturday:

Friday
12 p.m.  Alumni Awards luncheon, Conference Center Ballroom
6 p.m  University Gala, R/A Facility

Saturday
10:45 a.m Alumni parade hospitality tent, Memorial Park, corner of Main an East    College Dr.
11 a.m.  Homecoming parade
2-6 p.m.  Homecoming Tailgate/Family Fun Fest, R/A Facility parking lot area/Green Lot
6 p.m.  Kickoff, Mustangs vs. University of Sioux Falls, The Schwan Regional Event Center
9 p.m.-midnight: 176 Key Dueling Pianos, Brau Brothers Brewery

The SMSU Homecoming Football game versus the University of Sioux Falls is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The pre-game festivities will begin at 2 p.m. in the R/A Facility parking lot with family activities, music, food, beverages and a great social environment. Prior to the kick-off, there will be a ceremony at the fifty yard line dedicating the facility, the Schwan Regional Event Center.

On Sunday, the SMSU Department of Athletics will honor the 2012-13 academic and athletic achievements of the teams, student-athletes and department at the annual Celebration of Excellence ceremony. The event will begin with a social at 1 p.m. in the Conference Center Ballroom and the ceremony will begin at 1:30 p.m. 

This Week in SMSU Athletics

The #18 SMSU Soccer team (8-0, 5-0 NSIC) did not move in the national rankings this week after going 2-0 this past weekend. The Mustangs beat St Cloud State and UMD to cap off an undefeated five-game homestand. This weekend SMSU hits the road heading north for games versus Bemidji State on Saturday and Minnesota Crookston on Sunday. The Mustangs are currently tied for 1st place in the NSIC with Augustana and Minnesota State all with a 5-0 record.

Congratulations to soccer player Danica Requejo who was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week for her performance this past weekend.

The SMSU Football team (2-2 NSIC, 0-0 NSIC South) will return home this Saturday, to open NSIC South Division play versus the University of Sioux Falls (2-2 NSIC, 0-0 NSIC South). The Homecoming game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center. The Mustangs are coming off a tough loss on the road at Bemidji State 40-41, last Saturday.

The #7 SMSU Volleyball team (10-3, 5-0 NSIC) will continue NSIC action on the road this weekend also heading
north to the University of Mary on Friday and Minot State on Saturday. The Mustangs are coming off two home
wins versus Northern State and Moorhead State last weekend. SMSU is currently tied for 1st place in the NSIC with
Concordia St. Paul.

The Mustang Women’s Golf team will compete in the twelve team NSIC Fall Championship this Saturday and Sunday at The Classic at Madden's in Brainerd, MN. SMSU is coming off a 3rd place finish in the Mustang Invite held at the Marshall Golf Club. This weekend’s competition will conclude the Mustang Women’s Golf team’s fall schedule.

The SMSU Women's and Men's Cross Country teams competed at the Roy Griak Invitational hosted by the University of Minnesota at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, MN, last Saturday. The SMSU men's team finished 27th out of 40 teams in the 8k race, while the Mustang women's team earned a 29th place finish out of 32 teams in the 6k race.

Trent Smith led the Mustang men with a 64th place with a time of 26 minutes and 40 seconds. On the women's side, Amanda Grengs posted a team-best 25:52 to earn 177th place. Friday, both teams will compete in the South Dakota State Classic in Brookings, SD.
