Hello Mustang Fans!
It will be another weekend of collegiate and high school athletic events on the campus of SMSU. Mustang Volleyball will kick-off the weekend by hosting home matches on Friday (Minot State) and Saturday (University of Mary). The SMSU Men’s Basketball team will host the SMSU Classic featuring a four-team MIAA/NSIC cross over with two games scheduled on Saturday and two on Sunday. The Mustangs will welcome Northwest Missouri State (MIAA), Fort Hays State (MIAA) and Upper Iowa (NSIC) to Marshall for this weekend’s competition.
Also on Saturday, the SMSU Department of Athletics will host two MSHSL quarter final football games. At 12:00 p.m. in the Schwan Regional Event Center, Mountain Lake Area will battle Grand Meadow in 9-man football. At 3:00 p.m., Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity and Sleepy Eye St. Mary will compete with the winner of both contests earning a trip to Minneapolis to compete for a State Championship.
The teams visiting SMSU and the Marshall community this weekend will represent five states and bring fourteen plus buses to our community throughout the weekend. We wish all of our visitors a great experience while in Marshall and on the campus of SMSU.

This Week in SMSU Athletics
The #19 SMSU Soccer team (14-3-2, 10-2-2 NSIC) competed in the NSIC/US Bank Soccer Tournament yesterday against Upper Iowa (14-4-0, 12-3-0 NSIC) in a first round contest. The Mustangs lost 0-1 to the Peacocks as SMSU has been held scoreless in the last for contests. Southwest will now wait to see how the final Central Region rankings play out in the next week. SMSU was ranked 4th in this week’s regional ranking.
The #8 SMSU Volleyball team (18-6, 13-3 NSIC) went 1-1 this past weekend with a victory over St. Cloud State
before losing to #3 UMD in Duluth, MN in straight sets. The Mustangs are home this weekend playing host to
Minot State (12-14, 7-9 NSIC) on Friday night at 7:00 p.m in the PE Gym.
Saturday, SMSU will battle the University of Mary (5-19, 1-15 NSIC) at 3:00 p.m. Both contests this weekend will
be part of Alumni Weekend for our Mustang Volleyball program. The volleyball team will be at home next
Tuesday, November 12 against Augustana with the match beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Yesterday, the NCAA Central Region Volleyball rankings were announced with the Mustangs ranked #5. SMSU is
one of five NSIC schools to appear in the regional rankings -- # 1 Concordia-St. Paul, #4 Minnesota Duluth,
#8 Augustana, # 9 Northern State, and #10 Wayne State. The Mid-America Athletic Association (MIAA) has three teams ranked -- #2 Central Missouri, # 3 Washburn and #7 Nebraska-Kearney. #6 Harding is the lone representative of the Great American Conference (GAC).
The SMSU Football team (5-4 NSIC, 3-2 NSIC South) is coming off an exciting 51-44 win over Winona State last week at the Schwan Regional Event Center. The Mustangs are currently in a five-way tie for third place in the NSIC overall standings and are tied for second place with Winona State and USF in the south division. SMSU is on the road this week playing Concordia St. Paul (4-5 NSIC, 2-3 NSIC South) at Mall of America Field at 2:00 p.m.
The SMSU Women's and Men's Cross Country teams will be competing on Saturday at the NCAA Region Championships in Sioux Falls, SD, hosted by Augustana College. The races will take place at Yankton Trails Park with the women's 6,000-meter race starting at 10:30 a.m., followed by the men's 10,000-meter race at 11:30 a.m. The women's race will feature 31 teams competing, while 25 teams will run in the men's race.
On the men's side, the top five teams and top three individuals not from a qualifying team advance to the national championships, while on the women's side the top four teams and top three individuals not from a qualifying team advance. The NCAA II National Championships will be held November 23 in Spokane, WA.
The SMSU Men’s Basketball team will open the 2013-14 season this weekend with a pair of home games versus Central Region opponents as part of the SMSU Classic at the R/A Facility. SMSU will open the season by playing Fort Hays State University (KS) at 5:00 p.m. The Mustangs will turn around on Sunday and battle Northwest Missouri State University with game time scheduled at 4:00 p.m.
Two other games will also be played during the two-day classic. Upper Iowa will take on Northwest Missouri State on Saturday starting at 3:00 p.m., while on Sunday afternoon Upper Iowa will compete against Fort Hays State at 2:00 p.m.
The SMSU Wrestling team competed last Sunday at the 21st Annual Warren Williamson/Daktronics Open held at South Dakota State University. Justin Reinsma (133 pounds) and Cole Wilson (285 pounds) both placed fourth at the tournament, while Codie Lane grabbed 8th place at 157 pounds. Congratulations to junior Cole Wilson who was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week for his performance on Sunday. The Mustangs will be back in action on November 13 when they open up the 2013-14 at home against Concordia College at 7:00 p.m in the PE Gym.
The SMSU Women’s Basketball team earned a 72-53 victory over St. Catherine University (MN) in exhibition play on Monday. The Mustangs will open the 2013-14 regular season next Tuesday, November 11at home versus Crown College at 7:00 p.m. at the R/A Facility.
