It will be another busy weekend for Mustang Athletics with a number of teams on the road, a few beginning post-season competition and SMSU Volleyball closing out the regular season hosting the #2 UMD Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. Our winter sports have begun with our Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams competing in exhibition games and our Wheelchair Basketball team played six games last week.
On Saturday, SMSU will host two state quarterfinal football games at the Schwan Regional Event Center.

This Week in SMSU AthleticsSMSU Women’s Soccer team (10-7-1, 9-5-1 NSIC) finished regular season play last week going 2-0. The Mustangs captured a 2-0 win over Wayne State on Friday and a 2-1 win over #23 Augustana College at home on Sunday. Southwest earned the #6 seed in the NSIC Tournament and played #3 seeded Winona State with the first round game having been played yesterday. With a win against Winona State, the Mustangs would play the winner of the Augustana/UMD match in Mankato, MN on Friday at 12:00 pm.
Congratulations to five of our SMSU soccer players who were named to the All-NSIC team.
Autumn Hayes was named to the All-NSIC first team, while
Megan Kilroy,
Miranda Cadena and
Kendahl Fisher were named to the All-NSIC second team.
Alex Pantze was named to the All-NSIC honorable mention team. Good luck to Coach Buchholz and our women’s soccer team this week!
The #6 SMSU Volleyball team (19-7, 14-4 NSIC) is 12-2 in their last fourteen matches this season posting two NSIC wins on the road last weekend versus Bemidji State 3-2 and UMC 3-2. The Mustangs will conclude the regular season conference schedule this weekend playing host to SCSU (7-19, 1-17 NSIC) on Friday for Senior Night with the match starting at 7:00 pm in the PE Gym.
On Saturday, Southwest will welcome the #2 UMD Bulldogs (26-1, 18-0 NSIC) to Marshall for the last regular season match of the year. Also on Saturday, the SMSU Volleyball program will host Parents Day at the match with the contest beginning at 4:00 pm in the PE Gym. The first round of NSIC Volleyball Tournament action will begin next Tuesday, November 11 at a location and time yet to be determined.
The Mustang Football team (2-7, 1-4 South Division) lost to Concordia St. Paul last Saturday 20-38. The Mustangs will travel to Winona State (4-5, 1-4 South Division) this Saturday with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 pm.
The SMSU Women’s and Men’s Cross Country teams will return to action this Saturday competing at the NSIC Championships in Wayne, NE. Both races will take place at Wayne Country Club with the men's 8,000-meter race starting at 11:00 am, followed by the women's 6,000-meter race at 12:15 pm. The men's race will feature 12 teams competing, while 15 teams will run in the women's race. At the 2013 NSIC Championships, the Mustang women finished 11th out of 15 teams, while the men's team finished eighth out of 13. Good luck to Coach Wolf and our women’s and men’s cross country teams as they look to improve on their 2013 finishes at the conference championships.
The SMSU Men’s Basketball team is in Lincoln, NE, today to face the #21 ranked Nebraska Cornhuskers, and former SMSU Head Men’s Basketball Coach, Tim Miles, in an exhibition game. The Mustangs are scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 pm at Pinnacle Bank Arena. SMSU is coming off a 67-60 win over the SMSU Alumni in their first exhibition game. Southwest will finish its exhibition schedule hosting St. Olaf on Monday, November 10 at the R/A Facility at 6:00 pm.
The SMSU Women’s Basketball team is 1-0 in exhibition play beating St. Kate’s last Sunday 93-83 at the R/A Facility. The Mustangs will be on the road this Sunday in Milwaukee, WI, to take on DI University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee in an exhibition game. The contest will start at 1:00 pm. Southwest will be home for two non-conference contests versus Metro State (CO) and Pittsburg State on November 15 & 16 in the R/A Facility.
Last Saturday, the SMSU Wrestling team hosted the Brown & Gold Duals in the PE Gym. The dual was an inter-squad scrimmage featuring our new and returning wrestlers competing for a spot in this year’s line-up. Coach Nelson was very happy with this year’s event which welcomed over 500 fans to the PE Gym for the event and more than 200 Mustang Wrestling Alums, family members and friends of the program were in attendance at the social following the Brown & Gold Duals.
The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball team went 3-3 last week as they opened up the 2013-14 season. The Mustangs had two victories over the Sioux Falls Wheelers last Friday before going 1-3 on Saturday against the Rolling Timberwolves. Southwest will be back in action on November 15-16 in the Lincoln Tournament in Lincoln, NE.

Congratulations to Rick Haberman, who provided the correct answer to last week’s Mustang Hoofprints Question: How many years has the SMSU Department of Athletics hosted the MSHSL Football Section Playoff games at the Schwan Regional Event Center? Mustang Athletics hosted four MSHSL section football playoff games in 2008 on the new field. SMSU has hosted these playoff games for seven consecutive years.
