It is a championship week for our winter sports as the SMSU Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams began the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments last night. The SMSU Women’s and Men’s Track & Field teams will be competing at the NSIC Indoor Championships hosted by MSU Mankato beginning today with competition ending on Friday.
The SMSU Wrestling team is also at MSU Mankato this weekend competing in the NCAA Super 3 Regional Championships starting on Saturday in Mankato, MN. It is hard to believe post-season competition is here for our winter sports. I would like to wish all our coaches and student-athletes who are competing in the NSIC Championships this week the best of luck!

This Week in SMSU Athletics The SMSU Men’s Basketball team (12-16, 8-14 NSIC) began post-season play yesterday as they took on St. Cloud State (17-11, 13-9 NSIC) in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, in St. Cloud, MN. With a win, the Mustangs would advance to compete at the Sanford Pentagon on Sunday, March 1, in Sioux Falls, SD, playing the winner of MSU Mankato and Minnesota Crookston at 2:30 pm. The Mustangs went 0-2 in their final NSIC contests of the regular season. Southwest lost on Friday to Concordia St. Paul 63-86 and MSU Mankato on Saturday, 73-108.
The SMSU Women’s Basketball team (3-23, 3-19 NSIC) headed to Northern State yesterday to battle the Wolves (22-6, 16-6 NSIC) in the first round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament, in Aberdeen, SD. With a win, Southwest would advance to play the winner of Augustana College or Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, February 28 at 12:00 pm at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, SD. SMSU is coming off an 0-2 weekend where the Mustangs lost on Friday evening to Concordia St. Paul, 64-80, and MSU Mankato, 64-83 on Saturday.
The SMSU Wrestling team (8-10, 3-5 NSIC) will head to MSU Mankato on Saturday to compete in the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 Championships in Mankato, MN. The Mustangs are coming off a 0-47 loss to Concordia College last week. Heading into this week’s competition, Southwest has three wrestlers individually ranked in the region rankings.
Jordan Biehn, a freshman from Jackson, MN, is ranked 10th in this week's region ranking at 133 pounds and is 18-10 this season with four pins.
Jacob Begin, a senior from Anoka, MN, is ranked third in this week's Super Region 3 ranking at 174 pounds and is 24-3 this season with nine falls and five technical falls.
Cole Wilson, a senior from Fairbault, MN, is ranked third in the region rankings at 285 pounds and is leading the Mustangs with a 27-4 record with 10 pins and 11 decisions. SMSU is ranked 10
th out of fifteen teams coming into the Super Region 3 rankings with five points.
The SMSU Women’s and Men’s Indoor Track & Field teams competed in a dual with Northern State University last Friday at the Barnett Center. The SMSU men's team earned a 75.5-57.5 victory in 13 events scored, while the NSU women's team picked up a 64-49 win in 11 events.
The Mustang men's team was led by
Alejandro Sanchez, who earned a victory in the 800-meter with a time of 1:55.99, while
Albert Rogalski and
Zach Jones earned victories in the long jump and triple jump respectively. Rogalski finished with a mark of 6.55m, while Jones won with a jump of 13.62m.
Tyler Scotting won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 7.8, while
Alex Weis and
Jordan Flinn finished 1-2 in the weight throw. Weis won with a toss of 15.81m, while Flinn recorded a throw of 15.55m.
Evan Bonneson captured first place in the mile run with a time of 4:37.39.
For the SMSU Women’s Track & Field team, Rylee Armstrong took first place in the triple jump with a mark of 11.34m. Kim Shabino also placed first in the 200-meter with a time of 26.4, finishing ahead of teammate Eisha Oden's second place time of 26.82. Oden won the 400-meter with a time of 1:01.53.
The Mustangs will now compete in the NSIC Championships hosted by MSU Mankato this Thursday and Friday in Mankato, MN.
The SMSU Wheelchair Basketball team (8-31) is idle this week as they prepare for the National Wheelchair Basketball Tournament hosted in Columbia, MO on the campus of the University of Missouri March 5-7.
The SMSU Women’s Tennis team (1-6, 0-5 NSIC) will have two NSIC matches this weekend. Southwest will face-off against the University of Mary (1-4, 1-4 NSIC) on Saturday starting at 5:00 pm, before playing MSU Moorhead (3-2, 3-2 NSIC) at 8:00 pm with both matches being played at the Oakdale Village Fitness Club in Minnetonka, MN. Last weekend, Southwest went 0-2 in NSIC play, losing to Winona State 2-7 and Upper Iowa 0-9.
The SMSU Softball team (3-3) played UMD on Wednesday dropping the doubleheader to the Bulldogs, 0-5 and 1-11 with the games being played in the West St. Paul Dome. The Mustangs will now gear up for their spring trip to compete in the Spring Games in Clermont, FL beginning March 8 and continuing play through March 13. SMSU will play twelve games while on their spring trip before coming home to a ten-game home stand beginning with a doubleheader versus Dakota Wesleyan (SD) on March 18.
The SMSU Baseball team has cancelled the four-game set with Quincy (IL). The games were originally scheduled for last weekend, and now due to poor weather conditions forecasted in Pittsburg, KS, for this weekend, SMSU announced the cancellation of the series
The Mustangs will open their regular season in Tucson, AZ, at the Tucson Invitational where SMSU will play eleven games in nine days, March 6-14. Southwest’s next contests are scheduled for March 28-29 with two doubleheaders at Alumni Field against Minot State.
We are still two weeks away from the SMSU Women’s Golf team opening their 2015 spring season in Buckeye, AZ, as they host the SMSU Spring Invite at Sundance Golf Club on March 12-13. The Mustangs will also compete in the Fort Hays State Spring Thaw on March 16-17 played at the Dobson Ranch Golf Course in Mesa, AZ.
