SMSU and Marshall Public Schools will be hosting the grand opening ceremony for the Marshall Regional Track & Field Complex on Tuesday, April 14, at 3:30 pm to officially open the facility.
The event is free and open to the public. The complex will be the home for both SMSU and Marshall Public Schools Track & Field programs, SMSU Rugby, along with other various events for the community. The project is a partnership with SMSU and Marshall Public Schools. The complex is located on the northeast corner of the SMSU campus and is a renovation and expansion of the Mattke Field stadium.
Scott Monson, Superintendent, from Marshall Public Schools, SMSU President Dr. Connie J. Gores and SMSU Student Body President Rachael Posusta will speak at the grand opening, while members of the SMSU and Marshall Public Schools track & field teams will also be present.
Following the grand opening, the Marshall High School track teams will host a five-team meet featuring Montevideo, Yellow Medicine East, Southwest Minnesota Christian and Lakeview High Schools starting at 4:00 pm.
The Marshall Regional Track and Field Complex includes a 9-lane, double bend, 400-meter track and includes a water jump pit, hurdle for the steeplechase and high jump area. An NCAA regulation, synthetic turf, soccer/football field is placed within the track. Field events will take place on the north end of the track and field complex, including long jump, triple jump, pole vault, shot put, discus and javelin.
The official groundbreaking for the Marshall Regional Track & Field complex was held on April 14, 2014. Please join us on Tuesday, April 14 at 3:30 pm for the grand opening ceremony of the Marshall Regional Track and Field Complex.
The next event on tap for the Mustang Booster Club is the 5th Annual Mustang Stampede "Glow Run" and after party which will be held on Friday, April 24, 2015, at the Schwan Regional Event Center. The Mustang Stampede Glow Run is a 5K walk/run is open to everyone! Registration will begin at 7:00 pm with the race beginning at 8:00 pm. Women, men, students, and families are all encouraged to participate. Strollers are welcome, kids 12 and under are free! Following the run, a "GLOWtastic After Party" will be held!
The event is based on a team concept. A team captain is responsible for recruiting as many members as possible. Individual registration and donations will be applied to the team's fundraising total.
Individuals not associated with a team may also walk or run in the 5K. See individual registration information for the benefits received at each level.
Also mark your calendars as the 2015 David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic will be held on June 12 this spring at the Marshall Golf Club. Sponsorship and registration information can be found on the SMSU Athletics website.

This Week in SMSU AthleticsThe SMSU Softball team (14-12, 3-3 NSIC) split a doubleheader with Concordia St. Paul on Tuesday winning game one 8-2 before losing the second game 7-10. The Mustangs played Division I, South Dakota State University in a doubleheader yesterday afternoon.
Southwest will head north this weekend for two NSIC doubleheaders. SMSU will take on the University of Mary (14-19, 3-4 NSIC) on Friday in Bismarck, ND with a 1:00 pm start time. On Saturday, they will travel to Minot State (22-8, 3-4 NSIC) with the doubleheader starting at noon.
The SMSU Baseball team (10-12, 3-3 NSIC) split a doubleheader on Tuesday with Winona State in Winona, MN. The Mustangs lost game one 8-10 before SMSU rallied in the ninth inning of game two to earn a 10-7 win over the Warriors. Southwest will head to Aberdeen, SD, this Friday and Saturday to battle Northern State (9-12, 3-7 NSIC) playing a doubleheader each day. Friday’s contests are scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm with Saturday’s doubleheader starting at 4;00 pm.
The SMSU Women’s Tennis team (4-12, 0-9 NSIC) lost 6-3 to Minnesota Duluth before dropping a 7-2 decision to St. Cloud State in NSIC competition this past Sunday at the Swanson Tennis Center, in St. Peter, MN. The Mustangs opened the match against UMD taking one of the three doubles matches as
Gabby Tellijohn and
Katie Kienitz took the # 1 doubles with a 8-3 win.
In singles play, # 1
Gabby Tellijohn earned a win with a 6-3, 6-2 score to start off the Mustangs. UMD went on to take the next three singles matches before
Ashley Hoehne continued her success and pushed her winning streak to seven matches with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 victory in the # 5 spot. UMD took the last singles match and defeated SMSU 6-3.
In the second game, SMSU # 2 doubles,
Crystal Overbaugh and
Ashley Hoehne took the lone doubles match by a close 9-7 (7-3) decision. Hoehne recorded the lone win in singles action and in the process earned her eighth straight win with a 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) win at # 5 singles. SCSU took the rest of the singles and defeated the Mustangs 7-2. SMSU will conclude the regular season schedule on April 11 with two NSIC matches versus Bemidji State at 9:00 am and Minnesota Crookston at 1:00 pm.
The SMSU Women’s Golf team earned a fourth place finish at the 36-hole, eight-team Nebraska-Kearney Invite on Tuesday of this week at Awarii Dunes Golf Club.
The Mustangs shot an opening round 333 on Monday, recorded a score of 320 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 653. Nebraska-Kearney won the team title with a score of 633. UNK's Samantha Crawford earned medalist honors with an 8-over 152.
Ashley Bixby shot SMSU's low round with a 6-over 78, tying for her lowest round of the season.
Lauren Kerr and
Dana Wagner each shot an 8-over 80, while
Becky Koepp and
Megan Will both carded 10-over 82s.
Kerr finished eighth overall with a 161, while Bixby finished tied for 14th with a 164. Will and Koepp tied for 18th overall with a 165, while Wagner earned a tie for 20th place with a 166.
SMSU will return to action on April 25-26 when they compete at the NSIC Spring Championships at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton, MN.
The SMSU Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track and Field teams will begin their spring outdoor season today competing in the Vance Butler Memorial Invitational held at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, SD. This is a two-day meet held today, with the hammer throw taking place at 1:00 pm, and the remainder of the track and field events will begin at 10:00 am on Friday.
