We are in the last week of classes at SMSU with finals taking place next week. On Saturday, May 9, SMSU’s Commencement ceremony will be held in the R/A Facility beginning at 10:00 am. It is hard to believe we are about ready to close-out the 2014-15 academic year.
Please mark your calendars for the 2015 David and Carol Drown SMSU Golf Classic will be held on June 12 this spring at the Marshall Golf Club. Sponsorship and registration information can be found on the SMSU Athletics website.

The SMSU Baseball team (19-25, 12-16 NSIC) hosted Bemidji State University (10-31, 7-19 NSIC) yesterday in a NSIC doubleheader. The Mustangs went into the contest tied for ninth place in the NSIC standings. The top eight teams qualify for the NSIC/US Bank Tournament on May 6-9 in Sioux Falls, SD.
The Mustangs and the Beavers have played two times already this season during their spring trip schedule in Tucson. SMSU went 1-1 with BSU winning 17-8 on March 11 and SMSU earning a 7-3 victory on March 14. This weekend, Southwest will close out the regular season with a four-game home series versus Wayne State on Friday (1:30 pm start time) and Saturday (12:00 pm start time) at Alumni Field. The SMSU Baseball team will host a cancer awareness day during Saturday’s games with the dollars raised going to support Greta Geist and children’s cancer research.
Congratulations to the SMSU Softball team (25-27, 14-16 NSIC) who will be competing this week in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament. The #10 seeded Mustangs will play the #7 seeded UMD Bulldogs at 10:00 am today at Sherman Park in Sioux Falls, SD. With a win, Southwest would move on to play #2 Winona State at 2:00 pm. With a loss, SMSU will play at 4:00 pm. I would like to wish our SMSU Softball team the best of luck this week in the NSIC/US Bank Tournament!
The SMSU Women's Golf team closed out its season with a final round score of 343 to finish in sixth place at the 12-team NSIC/US Bank Championships at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club this past Sunday. SMSU finished the four-round championship with a score of 1,398. The first two rounds of the championship were played last October at The Classic at Madden's in Brainerd, MN.
Augustana won the team championship with a score of 1,284, finishing 22 shots ahead of Concordia-St. Paul. Augustana's Sierra Langlie won the individual championship with a score of 24-over-par 312. For the second straight round,
Megan Will led SMSU on Sunday with an 11-over 83.
Ashley Bixby carded a 16-over 88 on Sunday and finished tied for 16th overall with a 57-over 345.
Lauren Kerr finished in 25th place with a score of 13-over 85 today.
Becky Koepp recorded a score of 16-over 88 and placed 29th overall with score of 72-over 360, while
Dana Wagner shot a 15-over 87 today to finish tied for 34th overall with a total of 82-over 370. Bixby led SMSU with an 83.1 stroke average in 20 rounds, while Kerr was second with an 84.4 average.

The SMSU Women’s and Men’s Outdoor Track & Field teams competed at the 14th Annual Drake Alternative Meet hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College this past Saturday.
In the women's side,
Kim Shabino was spot-lighted in the women's 100 meter dash as she finished third overall with a time of 12.97, while teammate
Alycia Hohenstein crossed the line with a time of 13.44 for a sixth place finish. Shabino also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.48.
Eisha Oden made her mark in the 400-meter dash as she placed third with a time of 58.75.
Savannah Ramirez finished second in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:00.98. The SMSU women's 4x100-meter relay found its spot on the top of the list after recording a 50.21 mark and claiming the first place spot. Hohenstein, Shabino,
Samantha McNeel and Oden make up the relay.
On the men's side,
Ben Ryan finished third in the men's 100-meter dash with a final time of 11.34 and also finished fourth in the 200-meter dash with a 23.08 mark. In the 400-meter dash,
Alejandro Sanchez earned a fourth place finish with a time of 50.23 while
Chris Kveseth followed behind with a time of 50.84 for a sixth place finish.
Ewert Jansen van Rensburg earned himself a top-five finish in the men's 800-meter run as the freshman placed third with a time of 1:57.32.
Will Hanson found the top of the charts again in the men's 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.79 while
Austin LaFollette finished second in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.70.
The SMSU men's 4x100-meter relay also had great success after placing first with a time of 3:21.39. Kveseth, Lafollette, Jansen van Rensburg and Sanchez make up the relay.
A pair of Mustangs found themselves on the top of the list in the men's long jump as
Lucas Woods jumped a 6.71m for a first place finish, while
Zach Jones followed with a 6.49m jump for a second place finish. Both also finished in the top-five in the triple jump as Jones jump 13.54m for a first place finish, while Woods place second with a 13.16m mark.
Will Hanson closed off the events on a high note as the junior finished first in the javelin throw with a distance of 55.58m
This past weekend, SMSU sophomore,
Rylee Armstrong, also competed in the NSIC Heptathlon at Swisher Field with a 14th place finish. Armstrong, who battled through an injury suffered on Sunday, closed with 3,530 points during the seven events. Katlyn Sawtelle from the University of Sioux Falls won the overall individual title with 5,049 points.
Armstrong earned 469 points with a mark of 4.66m in the long jump, recorded 536 points with a personal best 33.12m toss in the javelin and ran a 3:09.65 in the 800 meters to earn 281 points. She ran a 17.44 in the 100 meter hurdles for 548 points, recorded a 1.5m mark in the high jump for 621 points, tossed 9.31m in the shot put for 484 points and finished with a time of 28.51 in the 200 meters for 591 points. The remainder of the NSIC Outdoor Championships will take place on May 8-9 in Sioux Falls, S.D.
The SMSU track & field teams continue action this Friday and Saturday at the Dakota Relays at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.
