Erin Contons becomes SMSU first player to earn NCAA first team All-America honors.

Contons Named First Team All-America

MARSHALL, MINN.:  Southwest Minnesota State senior Erin Contons was named first team All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association on Monday afternoon.  Contons becomes SMSU's first NCAA first team All-American.  Beth Elliott was named NAIA first team All-America in 1990.

Contons, a 5-foot-10, outside hitter from Apple Valley, Minn., makes her third appearance on the All-America team, after earning second team honors from AVCA and Daktronics for the past two seasons.  She has also been named first team AVCA All-Region three times and first team Daktronics All-Region four times.

This fall, she led the Mustangs with 27 double-doubles and 570 kills while finishing second on the team with 465 digs. In addition to Contons' is All-America and all-region honors, she is a four-time first team All-NSIC honoree and the 2007 NSIC Player of the Year.  Contons ranks first in the all-time NCAA Division II career attack attempts record book and is the school record holder for career kills, kills per game, and attack attempts, while ranking second in digs.

SMSU finished second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference this fall with a 15-3 conference record and an overall record of 26-8.  The Mustangs finished the year ranked 11th in NCAA II and reached the North Central Region semifinals, before losing to Concordia-St. Paul.
