Jina Johansen Named Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach

MARSHALL, MINN.: Jina Johansen, who served as an assistant women's basketball coach at Augustana College last season, has been named to the same position at Southwest Minnesota State University, head women's basketball coach Mike Jewett announced on Tuesday.

Johansen, who will begin her duties immediately, replaces Katie Huschle who resigned recently to pursue a high school teaching position.  Johansen will be in charge of recruiting, player development and summer camps at SMSU.

“Jina is a bright and motivated coach and a true student of the game,” Jewett said.  “She has had success as a player and a coach, and all of us in our program can benefit from her background.”

Johansen spent one season at Augustana helping lead the Vikings to a 22-9 overall record and a third place finish in the North Central Conference.

Prior to joining the Augustana staff, Johansen served as a graduate assistant coach at South Dakota State University working in all facets of the program.  During her two years with SDSU, the team recorded a 44-15 record and reached the quarterfinals of the WNIT in 2007.

A native of Dannebrog, Neb., Johansen was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at the University of Nebraska.  During her career she scored 568 points while dishing out 567 assists ranking second all-time in school history.  As a senior in 2004-05, she was named honorable mention All-Big 12 starting all 32 games while setting a senior single-season school record with 191 assists.

Johansen, a three-time first team Academic All-Big 12 award honoree, earned her bachelor's degree from the University of Nebraska in 2005 and her master's degree from South Dakota State University in 2007.
