STARKVILLE, Miss.
- The National Fastpitch Coaches Association has announced that the Southwest Minnesota State softball team has been honored as an All-Academic team for its success in the classroom during the 2008-09 academic year  SMSU’s cumulative team grade point average of 3.244 ranked 34th in the country.

The Mustangs were one of five Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference teams to rank in the top 35.

"I think this honor speaks volumes for how hard the girls work outside of softball,"  said head coach Shawn Semler.  "They put in tons of hours in the classroom and at study tables.  They have such a great work ethic, and I'm very proud of their effort in the classroom."

Ouachita Baptist’s team GPA of 3.663 was the highest in the nation.

No stranger to academic achievement, the SMSU softball team also had seven players named to the 2009 Academic All-NSIC team.

SMSU finished the 2009 season with a 32-23 (21-5 NSIC) record and won the NSIC regular season title for the fourth straight season and fifth in the last six years. The Mustangs also made their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Southwest Minnesota State University, located in Marshall, Minn., is a member of NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
