MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State head softball coach Shawn Semler announced today the signing of Chelsey Evans, a pitcher who will transfer to SMSU from Division I South Dakota State. Evans will have three years of eligibility remaining.

A native of Pipestone, Minn., Evans recorded six starts in the circle for the Jacks in 2009 and posted a 1-5 record. Her best outing in 2009 came in a win against Indiana University-Purdue University  Indianapolis when she went a complete game and struck out six.  She also saw time in the field where she made 13 starts.

Evans was a four-year letterwinner at Pipestone Area High School where she threw a school-record six no-hitters and recorded one perfect game. She was a three-time all-conference, all-section and all-state first team honoree and led her squad to the 2007 Minnesota state championship. During her prep career, Evans compiled a record of 47-8 and recorded 541 strikeouts. She was also a letterwinner in volleyball and basketball.

“Chelsey will be a great addition to our pitching staff,” said Semler, “Coming from SDSU, she has thrown against some of the best teams in the country, which will undoubtedly benefit us.”

Evans joins six other newcomers who have signed for the 2010 season.

SMSU finished the 2009 season with a 32-23 (21-5 NSIC) record and won the NSIC regular season title for the fourth straight season and fifth in the last six years. The Mustangs also made their fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.

Southwest Minnesota State University, located in Marshall, Minn., is a member of NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
