BURNSVILLE, Minn. - The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference announced today that Southwest Minnesota State's
Cara Carson and
Mary Groth both have been named player of the week.
Carson was named NSIC Setter of the Week while Groth was named NSIC Offensive Player of the Week.
Carson, a native of Omaha, Neb. had 115 assists in three wins this week as the Mustangs hit .333 as a team. She picked up 43 set assists in a win over No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul as she averaged 11.50 assists per set. The junior continues to rank towards the top of the NSIC and nation in set assists. She currently sits in second in the NSIC averaging 12.16 assists per set. She has 693 set assists this season. This marks the third time this season Carson has been NSIC Setter of the Week.
Out of West Bend, Wis., Groth had a big week for the Mustangs picking up 45 kills over three wins. The sophomore had 17 kills while committing no errors on 27 attempts and a season-high .630 hitting percentage in a 3-0 win over MSU Moorhead on Friday. Groth had 14 kills against No. 6 Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota, Crookston as well. Groth led the NSIC in kills per set (4.50) while hitting .488 for the week. This is the first time that Groth has been named player of the week this season and the third of her career.
Carson and Groth are the fifth and sixth Mustangs to be named player of the week by the league office this season.
Winona State's Shannon McGowan was named NSIC Defensive Player of the Week.
Southwest Minnesota State will continue NSIC play this weekend when they host Augustana College at 7 p.m. on Friday. The Mustangs will then welcome the NSIC's lone undefeated team in Wayne State at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
