ABERDEEN, S.D. - Southwest Minnesota State qualified three wrestlers for the NCAA Championships Sunday at the Super Region Three tournament at Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.
Brandan Schunk qualified at 141 pounds, #C.D. Johnson
at 184 pounds and Brian Rodas# at 285 pounds.
Schunk used a pin in the true fourth-place bout to get his bid to the NCAA Championships. The junior pinned Northern State's Benton Crow in 4:48. He went 3-2 on the day at 141 pounds, picking up wins in the first round and in his fifth-place bout--a contest that set him up for the true fourth-place tilt.
Johnson lost his opening-round bout and made his way through wrestlebacks to notch a fourth-place finish at 184 pounds. His two wins in the wrestlebacks, one of which came by fall, set him up with Mary's Brady Anderson in the third-place bout, but Johnson fell 4-2. He compiled a 2-2 record on the day.
Rodas won his opening-round bout at 285 pounds, pinning Augustana's Lance Peters in 5:48. After falling in championship semi-final action, Rodas posted another win by fall in the wrestlebacks, pinning Northern State's Jared Little in 7:45. Minnesota State Moorhead's Tim Johnson squeaked out a 5-3 decision over Rodas in the third-place bout.
Demond Carter nearly qualified at 149 pounds as well The junior fell to Minnesota State, Manakto's Travis Elg in the third-place bout, which set him up with Upper Iowa's Derek Stolarzyk for the true fourth-place contest. Stolarzyk posted an 8-3 decision to take the final qualifying spot.
The Mustangs finished sixth in the final team standings, amassing 53.5 points. Augie won the tournament with 120.5 points.
The NCAA championships are March 12 and 13 in Omaha, Neb.
