Mustang Volleyball Adds Two for 2010

MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State head volleyball coach Terry Culhane has announced the signing of two student-athletes for the 2010 season.  Abby Meyers from Sioux Falls, S.D, and Jordyn Sondrol from Turtle Lake, N.D., have both signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at SMSU.

The pair join Rachel Westby from Marshall, Minn., Ellen Degler from Chaska, Minn., and Maggie Lindow from Nevis, Minn., in the 2010 signing class.

Meyers will graduate from Sioux Falls O'Gorman High School this spring.  A three-year letterwinner, she recorded 706 kills and 259 blocks during her prep career.  Meyers was also a three-time All-Greater Dakota Conference pick and was named first team all-state this past season.  The 6-foot-1 middle/rightside was also a standout on the basketball court, where she was a two-time all-conference honoree earned all-state accolades in 2010.

“We're excited to have Abby join our volleyball team,” said Culhane.  “She is a quality person and a good athlete whose best volleyball is ahead of her; she is a versatile player with untapped potential. Abby also will be a great fit to our team academically, athletically and socially.”

Sondrol, a 5-foot-10 outside hitter, is currently a senior at Turtle Lake-Mercer High School in Turtle Lake, N.D.  She finished her prep career with 803 kills, 273 digs, 169 blocks and 139 service aces.  A four-year letterwinner, Sondrol was named District 10 Senior Athlete of the Year this past season and was a three-time all-district and two-time all-region selection.  She also excelled in basketball and track at TLMHS.
 
“Jordyn is a welcome addition to this program,” Culhane said.  “She is an athletic young lady, and we expect her to benefit greatly from the training she will get in her college career. Jordyn is also an outstanding student, and we are  looking forward to her having a successful career as an SMSU student-athlete.”

SMSU finished the 2009 season 25-8 (15-5 NSIC) and made its sixth straight and seventh overall NCAA tournament appearance.

Southwest Minnesota State University, located in Marshall, Minn., is a member of NCAA Division II and the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.
