MARSHALL, Minn. - Zack Vogelsberg, an assistant coach at Union College (Ky.) for the past three seasons, has been named an assistant coach for the Southwest Minnesota State University women's basketball program, head coach
Allison Kruger announced Wednesday.
During his three-year tenure at Union College, an NAIA Division II school located in Barbourville, Ky., Vogelsberg helped lead the team to 67 victories, two regular season conference titles, one conference tournament title and an appearance at the NAIA National Tournament. He coached eight all-conference players, including a three-time All-America and three-time conference player of the year.
“Zack brings great experience and a winning mentality to this program,” Kruger said. “He has been a very successful assistant coach over the years and I'm thrilled that he is joining our staff. Zack's greatest asset is his ability to recruit quality student-athletes that can compete at a high level. He will make an immediate impact on Mustang women's basketball.”
Prior to coming to Union College, Vogelsberg spent one season (2006-07) as an assistant coach at Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minn., and one season (2005-06) as the assistant coach at Frostburg State University (Md.), which finished 18-10 and advanced to the ECAC South Region Postseason Tournament.
Vogelsberg began his coaching career at Bethel University in St. Paul, Minn., spending three seasons (2002-05) as an assistant coach. During his tenure at Bethel, he helped bring a team that had won under five games for seven consecutive seasons to double-digit wins by the time of his departure.
Vogelsberg is a 2002 graduate of the University of Iowa with a degree in marketing and a minor in psychology, while earning his master's degree in health and physical education at Union College in 2009. During his tenure at Iowa, he served four years as a manager for the women's basketball team as well as a practice player.
Southwest Minnesota State University, located in Marshall, is a member of NCAA Division II and competes in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. SMSU finished 15-12 this past season, recording the program's first winning season since 2004-05. Kruger begins her first season as head coach in 2010-11, after being named to the position on April 7.
