MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University volleyball team is set to host its annual "Late Show." The yearly intrasquad match will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at the Physical Education Gymnasium. The SMSU volleyball squad is coming off its sixth straight NCAA tournament experience.
The scrimmage takes place on the first evening of the 2010 Gold Rush Days. Students attending have a chance to win prizes such as a DVD player, CD player, t-shirts, DVD's and gift certificates from area businesses. There will also be promotional contests between games with prizes awarded to the winners. Those games include, the Papa John's serving contest and musical chairs.
The Mustangs started practice for the 2010 season when the team opened fall camp on Monday. Head coach
Terry Culhane, entering his seventh season, returns 10 letterwinners from 2009. Filling out the 2010 roster are five incoming freshman.
SMSU is coming off a fourth place finish in the NSIC in 2009. The Mustangs ended the season 25-8, 15-5 NSIC while making its sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament. The 2009 Mustangs found themselves in the weekly AVCA Division II Coaches' Top 25 Poll. At seasons end, SMSU was ranked No. 16 in the last poll of the season on Dec. 7.
The Mustangs open the 2010 campaign on Sept. 3 when they travel to Golden, Colo. to compete in the Courtyard by Mariott/Residence Inn Oredigger Volleyball Classic hosted by the Colorado School of Mines.
