MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State University soccer team was victorious in its first showing of the young 2010 season. The Mustangs defeated Bethel University 3-1 at Mattke Field this evening. The Mustangs fell behind early but were able to make the comeback scoring two goals in the second half to overcome the Royals.
Kelly Fitzgerald (F, 5-7, Jr., Marshalltown, Iowa) notched the game-winning goal at the 67th minute of the game. Fitzgerald received give-and-go pass from teammate
Maggy Rouse (F, 5-8, So., Cambridge, Minn.) and fired the ball past the Bethel goalkeeper.
Freshman
Whitney Borstad (M, 5-2, Coppell, Texas) sealed the win for the Mustangs when she fired a pass from Fitzgerald past the Bethel keeper in the 89th minute of the match.
Tatum Borstad (D, 5-7, Sr., Coppell, Texas) also pitched in on the scoring when she tied the game just before halftime. T. Borstad got to the ball out of a scrum from a corner-kick and fired a shot into the back of the net.
Mustang keeper
Kendra Olchefske (5-7, Sr., Albert Lea, Minn.) came up big for SMSU making seven stops in the exhibition game.
The Mustangs open the non-conference schedule on Sept. 4 when they host Colorado-Colorado Springs at 7 p.m. at the Regional Events Center.
