No. 1 St. Cloud State downs SMSU in NSIC dual on Saturday night

CANBY, Minn. – No. 1 St. Cloud State University picked up three major decisions and two pins earning a 33-6 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wrestling victory over Southwest Minnesota State University on Friday night in Canby, Minn.

SMSU (7-4, 1-2 NSIC) and St. Cloud State (18-0, 5-0 NSIC) met up for an NSIC dual at Canby High School to cap off an entire day of wrestling in Canby, Minn. Prior to the match between the Mustangs and the Huskies, a youth tournament and a high school triangular took place.

SMSU's Justin Reinsma earned a hard-fought 9-7 overtime decision at 133 pounds while Jacob Begin won his eighth consecutive match pulling out a 10-5 decision.

St. Cloud State grabbed a 4-0 lead in the 125-pound bout with Eric Forde earning a 14-4 major decision over Travis Borchert. Justin Reinsma (133 pounds) got the Mustangs on the board winning a 9-7 decision over Zach Stewart.

Stewart held a 5-0 lead into the second period before Reinsma started his comeback. Reinsma got two late takedowns to force overtime and added another to win the bout 9-7 making the score 4-3 in favor of the Huskies.

Matt Leibforth extended SCSU's lead to 7-3 earning a 5-2 decision over Ethan Hildebrandt (141 pounds). Josh Howk then pinned Codie Lane in the 149-pound bout to extend the Huskies' lead to 13-3. In the 157-pound bout St. Cloud State's Jacob R. Horn earned a 10-1 major decision over Josh Anderson to give the Huskies a 17-3 lead.

Begin added three points to the Mustangs team score scrapping out a 10-5 decision over Dan Dick.

Tad Merritt pinned Trent Molacek (174 pounds) at 5:15 to push St. Cloud State's lead to 23-6. Derek Skala, ranked third in the nation at 184 pounds, pushed the lead to 26-6 with an 11-6 decision over Micah Larson (184 pounds).

Martin Hagen fought back from a 5-1 deficit but fell short dropping a 6-4 decision to Chris Brassell at 197 pounds and the Huskies extended their lead to 29-6. SMSU's Cole Wilson went into the heavyweight bout against the No. 1 ranked heavyweight in the country in Jacob Kahnke, and gave him a tough match with Kahnke going on to take an 11-2 victory.

Southwest Minnesota State returns to NSIC-action on Friday, Feb. 3, traveling to Sioux Falls, S.D. to take on No. 3 Augustana College at 7 p.m.
