SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University outdoor track & field teams opened its outdoor season today at the Vance Butler Memorial Invite at Howard Wood Field.
On the men's side, Will Hanson captured first place in the 110 meter hurdles with a possible NCAA qualifying mark of 14.3 and was sixth in the javelin with a throw of 49.81m.
Austin LaFollette recorded a fourth place mark in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.98, while Shawn Jensen had a strong showing in the discus with an eighth place finish with a throw of 43.35m.
Ewert Jansen van Rensburg recorded a fifth place finish in the 800 meters with a time of 1:59.49, while teammate Alejandro Sanchez placed eighth in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:10.67.
SMSU's 4x400 relay team of Zach Jones, Ewert Jansen van Rensburg, LaFollette and Chris Kveseth finished second with a time of 3:26.87.
On the women's side, Kim Shabino placed 10th in the 200 meter dash (26.09) and 13th in the 400 meter dash (1:02.90), with teammate Savannah Ramirez finishing in 17th place in the 1500 meters with a time of 5:13.28.
In the field events, Naomi Dalton tossed 39.78m in the discus to place sixth, while Rylee Armstrong earned a fourth place mark in the triple jump at 11.05m.
Southwest Minnesota State competes next Friday and Saturday at the Northwestern College Invite in Orange City, Iowa.
