MARSHALL, Minn. - Southwest Minnesota State student-athletes from the 2008-09 academic year were honored at the fourth annual Celebration of Excellence Sunday afternoon on the campus of SMSU.
Each SMSU team that made the NCAA Tournament was recognized, and all-conference, academic all-conference, seniors, team MVPs and Mustang Medalists were also honored.
Women's basketball player and golfer Abby Oakland was named the 2008-09 female scholar-athlete of the year, while baseball player Greg Laughlin was named male scholar-athlete of the year.
Men's basketball player Ross DeMasi received 2008-09 male athlete of the year honors, and softball player Amanda Burkhart was named female athlete of the year.
Former SMSU volleyball player Kasey Loeslie served as this year's student speaker.
Aaron Ziemer, sports director at Marshall Radio, again served as master of ceremonies.
