Mustangs Use Big Second Half to Pull Away from Gustavus

MARSHALL, Minn. -
No. 22 Southwest Minnesota State shot 59.4 percent in the second half, including making 5 of 8 three-point attempts to earn an 84-66 victory over Gustavus in exhibition men's college basketball in Marshall.
 
Trent Carlson and Taylor Huseby each scored 13 points to lead SMSU, while Jordan Miller added 11 points.  SMSU outrebounded Gustavus 37-26 and outscored the Gusties 40-18 in the paint.
 
The Mustangs held a 32-25 lead with 3:25 left in the opening half, before the Gusties rallied with a 7-0 run to close out the half and tie the game at 32-32 at halftime.
 
SMSU held a 44-41 lead in the first four minutes of the second half, before putting together a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to push the lead to 53-41 with 13 minutes left in the game and the Mustangs never looked back.
 
SMSU had seven players who scored at least eight points.  Andrew Peschong added six points, seven rebounds and dished out seven assists to help the Mustangs, while Kevin Andrews and Nick Dale each grabbed seven rebounds.
 
Jesse Van Sickle led Gustavus with 14 points on 6 of 14 shooting.
 
Southwest Minnesota State will open the regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 17, hosting Dordt College starting at 7 p.m.
