Mustang Men's Basketball Announces Team Award Winners

MARSHALL, Minn. - The Southwest Minnesota State men's basketball team held its annual end-of-the-year banquet on Saturday, April 17, celebrating the 2009-10 season.

First-year head coach Brad Bigler announced the team awards, including the recipient of the Most Valuable Player award, which was given to junior Scott Roehl.  Senior DeAnthony Zanders was tabbed the squad's Defensive Players of the Year, sophomore Trent Carlson was named the team's Most Improved Player, redshirt freshman Jordan Miller was named the Newcomer of the Year, while junior Taylor Huseby earned the Andy Wiersma Mustang Award.  The members of this year's team voted upon the awards.

Roehl, a 6-foot-7 forward from Princeton, Minn, lead SMSU in scoring (13.7) and rebounding (8.2), while shooting 49 percent (147 of 300) from the field.  A second team All-NSIC honoree, Roehl led the team with 21 double-figure scoring games and also led the team with four 20-point games and was the team's leader with seven double-doubles.

Zanders, a 6-foot guard from Des Moines, Iowa, earned the defensive award for the second straight season.  He was co-defensive player of the year a season ago with Ryan Krome.  Zanders played in 27 games this past season, making 26 starts and finished third on the team with 27 steals.  He finished fourth on the team in scoring (7.7) and was second in assists (88).  Zanders was named to the NSIC All-Tournament team helping lead SMSU to the championship game.

Carlson, a 6-foot-3 guard from Belle Plaine, Minn., played in 26 games averaging 5.3 points and finished third on the squad with 31 3-pointers.  He shot 40.2 percent (43 of 107) from the field and 37.8 percent (31 of 82) from 3-point range.  Carlson finished the season with six double-figure scoring games.

Miller, a 6-foot-4 guard from Mitchell, S.D., was the only Mustang player to start all 29 games and finished second on the team in scoring (11.1).  He led SMSU in 3-pointers made with 71, setting a school record for freshman players.  Miller shot 39.8 percent (105 of 264) from the field, including 39.4 percent (71 of 180) from 3-point range.  Miller had three 20-point scoring games and ranked 77th in the country in 3-point field goals per game. 

Huseby, a 6-foot-6 forward from Pelican Rapids, Minn., finished the season as the team's fifth-leading scorer (7.0), while ranking fourth in rebounding (3.9).  Huseby shot 52.5 percent (84 of 160) from the field and 67.4 percent (29 of 43) from the free throw line.  The Andy Wiersma Award is given to the player who exemplifies the qualities of being a Mustang men's basketball student-athlete.  It's the third straight season Huseby has earned the award.

Southwest Minnesota State finished the season with an overall record of 17-11 and finished in sixth place in the NSIC standings with a 10-10 record.  SMSU advanced to the championship game of the NSIC tournament before losing to St. Cloud State in the closing seconds 68-67.
