Click here to view the PDF Marshall, Minn.: For the first time in school history, Southwest Minnesota State University will be the host institution for the NCAA Division II North Region wrestling championships. The 2005 regional championship will take place this Sunday, February 27 at the R/A Facility on the campus of SMSU.
The regional features four teams ranked in the latest top 20 national rankings released on Wednesday, Feb. 23, including three of the top four teams in the country. Augustana College (S.D.), with a 20-19 victory over previous #1 Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night is the new top-ranked team in nation. Nebraska-Omaha is now ranked #2 while Minnesota State, Mankato is ranked 4th. Minnesota State Moorhead, the fourth North Regional team in the national poll, is ranked 16th.
Sundays championship also features 25 individuals who are ranked in the top eight in their respective weight class in the national rankings. Augustana leads the way with eight individuals ranked nationally, including four ranked #1.
First round action begins at 11 a.m. and will continue all day with the finals beginning at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the event can be purchased at the R/A Facility box office starting on Sunday morning. Cost is $12 for adults and $8 for students. Doors open at 10 a.m.
The North regional championship will feature 70 individuals from seven teams as they battle for a spot in the NCAA II National Championships which will be held on March 11-12 at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in Omaha, Neb. The top four place winners in each weight class will qualify for the national championships.
Three other regionals will also be taking place this weekend across the country. The East Regional is being held at the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown (Pa.), the Midwest Regional at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the West Regional at Chadron State (Neb.).
