2025-26 Sports Medicine Staff
The Southwest Minnesota State University athletics department has a committed sports medicine department to serve the needs of SMSU student-athletes. Under the direction of head athletic trainer, Amy Schmiesing, the department focuses on prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all student-athletes at SMSU.

Located in the Bellows Academic 130 (which connects to the Physical Education building, where the locker rooms are located), the athletic training room includes numerous rehabilitation devices, including five treatment tables, each equipped with an electrical stim/ultrasound machine. Also in the athletic training room is a large taping table, two ice machines, two whirlpools, various recovery tools and many rehab devices such as rubber bands, weights, medicine balls, stationary bikes and much more.

The Southwest Minnesota State University Sports Medicine staff is committed in making your experience as a Mustang student-athlete the best it can be as you continue your education at SMSU.

The athletic training form links for the 2025-26 academic year are located under the Student-Athlete Quick Links below.

••All pre-participation physicals need to be uploaded to the designated dropbox on the 2025-26 Sports Medicine Information course on D2L

NCAA Mandatory Sickle Cell Trait Testing - FOR INCOMING STUDENT ATHLETES
The NCAA mandates that medical examinations for athletic participation include sickle cell trait testing to ensure that all NCAA student-athletes have knowledge of their sickle cell trait status before the student-athlete participates in any intercollegiate athletic event. The results from this one-time test will be used by institutional and other applicable medical staff to provide individualized medical monitoring and care for each student-athlete at SMSU.

In order to compete in athletics at SMSU, the Sports Medicine staff must have on record your official lab test results. Starting in 1991, many states were testing infants at birth. Please check your medical records with your birth hospital system to see if there is record of your results. If you cannot access these results, please schedule this test PRIOR to your annual physical so your physician has access to your Sickle Cell Trait results at that time.

FOR RETURNING STUDENT ATHLETES – If you are a returning student-athlete that has previously been tested for Sickle Cell Trait and have provided these test results, then you will NOT need to provide proof of Sickle Cell Testing for the 2025-26 academic school year. If you have questions regarding this test, please reach out to Amy.Schmiesing@smsu.edu.

Sports Medicine Medical Sport Participation Clearance
The SMSU Sports Medicine Department has designed a D2L course to ease the completion of the required paperwork and videos for participation in your sport. You must be registered for classes at SMSU in order to have access to this course. On this course, the Sports Medicine staff will directly communicate with student-athletes about any important updates or necessary information.

This D2L course hosts the SMSU Sports Medicine Handbook, Concussion Education materials, Sickle Cell Trait materials, information regarding insurance, and other pertinent Sports Medicine information.
