SMSU Wrestler Shawn Plumley Injured in Motorcycle Accident

Marshall, Minn.: Southwest Minnesota State University wrestler Shawn Plumley is currently at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale, Minn., in serious condition after suffering an accident on an off-road motorcycle last Wednesday, August 3, near his hometown of Bird Island, Minn.

In the late afternoon of August 3, Plumley left his father at the their work site on his off-road motorcycle with his helmet on. Later that evening a neighbor discovered him lying in the ditch with his helmet broken off and lying 10 to 15 feet away cracked in half. Plumley was then air-lifted to the North Memorial Medical Center-Trauma Unit in Robbinsdale where he has spent the past week.

Plumley was unconscious when he arrived at the hospital and doctors had inserted a fiber optic needle to monitor
the pressure and swelling in his head. On Thursday, August 4, the medical team put Plumley in a drug-induced coma to help keep him still and calm and allow the swelling around his brain to decrease. On Tuesday evening, August 9, doctors decided that surgery was needed to lower the swelling on his brain. As of Wednesday, August 10, Plumleys family has said he came through the surgery o.k.

Plumley, who completed his sophomore season on the SMSU wrestling team this past year (157 pounds), advanced to the NCAA II National Championships in March and finished with a season record of 20-14.

The Plumley family has set-up a Web site to keep individuals updated on his progress at www.caringbridge.org/visit/shawnplumley
