Mustang Volleyball Sweeps Mary

BISMARCK, N.D.:  The No. 7 ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs earned a road victory tonight as they swept the University of Mary 3-0 (30-23, 30-24, 30-25).

SMSU improves to 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the NISC with the win while University of Mary falls to 7-10 overall and 3-8 in the conference.

The Mustangs were led by Erin Contons who had a team-high 15 kills and was second on the team in digs with 15.  She records her 17th double-double performance of the season.  Tricia Ingvalson also recorded double-digit kills with 11, while Laura Hegerle had nine and Leah Ashburn added seven.

Defensively, SMSU had four players with double-digit digs as Sarah Quiram led the way with 18 digs.  Contons had 15 while Hegerle had 13 and Lauren Swain chipped in 10.  Sara Graf led the team with 40 set assists and added six kills and nine digs.

The Mustangs had only a .182 hitting percentage while Mary had a .083 percentage.  SMSU out blocked the Marauders 11-to-8 as Southwest was led by Krystal Schwanke and Contons who each had six blocks assists.

The Mustang will have the weekend off and will be back in action on Wed. Oct. 17 when they take on Northern State University in Aberdeen, S.D. at 7 p.m.
