Borstad Breaks Record; Mustangs Fall in Double Overtime

Box Score

MARSHALL, MINN.:
Kayla Borstad made an SMSU record 19 saves in goal, but it was not quite enough as Southwest Minnesota State fell 2-1 to Upper Iowa in double overtime on Saturday afternoon.  The loss drops SMSU to 1-3-1 in the NSIC.

Borstad broke the previous record of 17 saves, set by Melissa Russell in 1998 in a loss to Winona State.

Lauren Smith scored her second goal of the day with just under a minute left in the second overtime to win the match for the Peacocks.  The shot came from 20 yards out from the left side and found the top-right corner of the net.  Her first goal came in the 18th minute and was assisted by Erica Baedke.

Tatum Borstad tied the match in the 86th minute on a free kick from 25 yards out on the left side.  SMSU had two great scoring chances in the first overtime.  Joelle Dean had the best opportunity just over four minutes into the extra period, but her shot from just outside the goal was blocked by a defender.  Jena Tiemeyer shot high from about 10 yard out in the 98th minute as well.  Kayla Borstad made one save in each period.

The Mustangs are back in action on Sunday when they host No. 19 Winona State at 1 p.m. at Mustang Field.
