Erin Contons breaks NCAA Division II career attempts record as she now had 6,128 attack attempts

ABERDEEN, S.D.:  No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State University senior Erin Contons becomes the new NCAA Division II record holder for career attempts and led the team with 18 kills in the 3-1 (30-25, 25-30, 30-18, 30-19) victory over Northern State University on Wednesday night in Aberdeen, S.D.

The Mustangs improve to 19-4 overall and 10-1 in the NSIC with the win, while Northern State falls to 11-10 overall and 6-7 in conference play.

SMSU had five players earn double-digit kills in the match.  Erin Contons lead the way with 18 kills in 58 attack attempts.  She now had a career total of 6,128 attack attempts while the NCAA Division II career record was held at 6,091. 

Leah Ashburn was second with 17 kills while Tricia Ingvalson had a team high hitting percentage of .400 tallying 13.  Laura Hegerle recorded 12 kills, while Krystal Schwanke had 10.

The Mustangs were also strong defensively having six players earn double-digit digs. Leading the way Contons with 21, while Sarah Quiram had 20 and Lauren Swain added 18.  Tiffani Burch tallied 14 while Sara Graf and Hegerle had 13 and 10.

Graf led the Mustangs with a career high 65 set assists.  The Mustangs out-blocked Northern 14.5-to-7 as they were led by Ashburn and Schwanke who had seven block assists each.

SMSU will be back in action on Friday when they face No. 4 Concordia St. Paul at 7 p.m. in Marshall, Minn.
