SMSU Sweeps MSU Moorhead

MARSHALL, MINN.:  The No. 7 ranked Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs had a .291 team-hitting percentage with  57 total kills in the 3-0 (30-25, 30-21, 32-30) sweep over Minnesota State University Moorhead on Saturday afternoon in Marshall, Minn.

SMSU battled hard for the victory as they were down 21-24 in the first game before evening it up at 24-24.  The Mustangs then finished scoring six straight points for the victory.  In the third game, the Mustangs trailed  6-12 early on before coming back to win in a dramatic 32-30 victory.

The Mustangs improve to 20-5 overall and 11-2 in the NSIC while MSU Moorhead is now 14-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play.

SMSU was led by Erin Contons who had a double-double performance of 17 kills and 17 digs.  She is currently second in the SMSU career record book for digs as she has 1,617 digs, while the record is held at 2,619.  Contons is the all-time leader in kills, kills per game and attack attempts at SMSU.

Second on the team was Laura Hegerle who had 14 kills in 35 attempts with just two errors for a .343 hitting percentage on the night.  The other Mustang to earn double-digit kills was Tricia Ingvalson who had a team-high .545 hitting percentage tallying 13 kills with one error in 22 attempts.

Defensively, the Mustangs had four players with double-digit digs.  Sarah Quiram led the way with 19 while Contons had 17.  # Lauren Swain dug up 11 balls while Sara Graf# had a double-double performance with 52 set assists and 10 digs.

SMSU out-blocked MSUM 10-to-8 and finished with 57 kills, 13 errors on 151 attacks while holding the Dragons to 46 kills and a .130 hitting percentage.

The Mustangs will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 24 when they travel to face Wayne College in Wayne, Neb. at 7 p.m.
